I've always been a bit like this. If someone buys me a gift I save it, for a special occasion or for best.

I notice last night I'm now doing it with everything. We had spag bol last night, there was me do we really need cheese? Best not bother with garlic bread.

Biscuits, no don't eat those, save them.....

That's the last packet of something, save it.

Strange feeling. I suppose I am almost meal planning based around what we have most of and saving anything else in case I have an emergency requiring cheese and or garlic bread.

Light hearted. Slowly going mad.....

I've noticed that I've started thinking exactly like that. I've not acted on it, so in your case I would have had the cheese and the garlic bread.

But I am with you 100% in terms of my thought processes at the moment.

viccat · 24/03/2020 14:58

I'm definitely thinking should I eat/use this now or save it for later in case I can't get any more in a few weeks time...

Aliensrus · 24/03/2020 14:59

I know what you mean, I am doing similar especially as I want to use up fresh things and keep back things that will last longer (like Parmesan and biscuits!).

I have made 4 x A3 size posters which lists all our food and BBE dates for the next 2 weeks. People think I’m bonkers but it’s very satisfying knowing how much there is and what we have to eat and when, and what we can leave to eat later.

Don’t all emergencies require garlic bread and cheese?!

moobar · 24/03/2020 15:00

Glad I'm not alone, well, kind of !

Yes DH did say oh do we not have garlic bread, I was a bit embarrassed at my silliness so said I forgot. Didn't matter but I was feeling anxious about my only value baguette lurking for that special day....

Ooohhhh posters.......

there isn't any interruption to the food supply. You can still go out for groceries when needed and online deliveries are starting to get back on track.

Please enjoy yourselves as much as you can with food and beauty stashes instead of trying to live like a pauper... what's the point in that? Putting misery upon misery. Live! Use your stuff! EAT THE CHEESE Grin

cantdothisnow1 · 24/03/2020 15:02

yes I am, I'm rationing food that we have here. WE had garlic bread last night and I only cooked half and froze the rest.
I have milk that's going to go sour so I'm making and freezing cheese sauce.

cantdothisnow1 · 24/03/2020 15:03

luebybooby I don't really want to go out unless I HAVE to. I don't want to shop more than absolutely necessary. It's not about living like a pauper it's about not taking unnecessary risk.

emilybrontescorsett · 24/03/2020 15:04

No I'm not.
We could all be dead next week.
Sorry but you never know.

moobar · 24/03/2020 15:04

Thank you @lubeybooby

On a positive Dd has started to walk so the wine rack in the kitchen is no longer safe.

I emptied it and removed various bottles of fizz that I am not going to tell you how long they have been there. But if I said Dd was a blessing after at least fifteen years of struggles that will give you an idea...

We decided we have saved them so long that this might be exactly the type of reason to drink them. Or pour them down the sink as they are now very very questionable.

I had DH do a written inventory of the freezer for planning purposes, which backfired when he presented me with a list written like this...

Anyone else hoarding their own stuff??
moobar · 24/03/2020 15:07

@emilybrontescorsett whilst I do appreciate the point you are making, I did say light hearted and telling someone who is clearly struggling with anxiety, in whatever form, they could be dead next week isn't the most helpful comment ever. I just wanted to talk to people about how silly my mind has gone just now and look for some other silly garlic bread positivity.

Be kind and all.

Yes! I had tea earlier and wanted a few rich teas with it but the packet hasn't been opened yet and I couldn't bring myself to open it.

Same with crisps, kids might want them, might not be able to get more so not eating any.

I could only get one broccoli floret and it is DD's favourite (mine too!) so I am trying to make it last for her and not having any.

DH and I find we are hardly eating any snacks now because we are too worried (not a bad thing I suppose).

It is madness because I know there is enough food but my mind says...'just in case'.

Stupidanduseless · 24/03/2020 15:10

I’m using as little insulin as possible so barely eating. I’m worried I won’t be able to get anymore.

HeronLanyon · 24/03/2020 15:15

YES ! I used half of one of my two lemons earlier.
I squeezed and froze the remaining half’s juice and then (think this may be slightly crazy??) I removed all the zest and froze that too - thought it might liven up a rice/stew/tinned based meal. Welcoming a bit of thrift and it’s really made me think about thoughtless waste etc. Hoping will have some new approaches when we are out of this. Support all.

moobar · 24/03/2020 15:16

Oh yes, completely agree saving things Dd likes for her. Fruit and also one broccoli head.

@Stupidanduseless that's awful. I don't know what to suggest. Can you put a prescription in early so that it allows for a bit extra time if it takes longer. We are quite rural but chemists are still doing prescription requests, just restricted collections.

I call it “husbanding our resources”.
Love that word... same for animal husbandry!

Yes, I have numerous single portions in the fridge of what COULD have been larger platefuls, but I’m holding back on the generosity.
Firstly because staying at home means we aren’t expending as much energy as before.
Secondly because it’s the right thing to do resources-wise.
Thirdly because we need to think about when our salaries get reduced to minimum union level.
Not so far over the horizon...

Twigletgirl27 · 24/03/2020 15:16

I've used a whole tin of tomatoes in making tonight's dinner. Hope I'll not live to regret it!

Connie222 · 24/03/2020 15:18

Yes! My family are calling me Scrooge. I dish out all portions now and god help anyone who wants a snack.

I can hear the kitchen door open a mile off and I’m there like fucking Mo Farah.

KatherineJaneway · 24/03/2020 15:19

I am doing this with crisps. Keeping an eye on how may I eat and what I have left.

lowlandLucky · 24/03/2020 15:21

I peeled lots of different Veg on Sunday, i kept the peelings, broccoli stalk etc and boiled it all up to make a veg stock, strained it all and added dried broth mix and made soup. Every i tem of food is now split in 2 if possible.

Stupidanduseless · 24/03/2020 15:22

My pharmacy has ‘closed for safety’ and it’s where my prescription automatically goes. I currently can’t get blood testing stuff but if I’m not eating or driving I don’t need as much. I mean I have some - my worry is when it goes, that’s it.

Smellbellina · 24/03/2020 15:25

I can hear the kitchen door open a mile off and I’m there like fucking Mo Farah.

😂

I don’t have a kitchen door but God forbid anyone who tries to sneak into to the old Snack drawer. Snacks are no longer a thing!

Actually I’m horrified by how wasteful my DC are, it is one thing out of all this that I am pleased we have had to wake up to and tackle. They’re fecking awful!

Serendipity79 · 24/03/2020 15:36

I love this! Im so pleased its not just me. Ive been locked down a week now with the kids. We haven't gone anywhere - I've not got them on rations exactly, but I am being very careful and I've realised how much they used to eat just for the sake of it so I am hoping a positive will be better shopping and eating habits. They were super grateful when someone dropped us some brioche and fruit in last night as they've had none all week!

Serendipity79 · 24/03/2020 15:37

It hasn't copied down the bit I was saying I loved, but it was the Mo Farah comment. I don't love lockdown, that would be strange :)
