Car MOT?

LochJessMonster · 23/03/2020 20:57

My car needs an MOT by the 10th April.
Was going to book it in next weekend.
What the hell do I do?

Following with interest, I'm in the same boat.

GCAcademic · 23/03/2020 21:04

I’d booked in to get a tyre puncture repaired tomorrow. If it can’t be sorted I have no way of getting to shops for food as I live rurally with no public transport.

I'm wondering if MOTs will be suspended. It looks like they introduced a three month suspension for HGVs a couple of days ago so maybe it will be widened.

DeadBod · 23/03/2020 21:07

My MOT is booked in for tomorrow Confused

user1353245678533567 · 23/03/2020 21:08

People on another thread were discussing bike repairs being an essential service and I started wondering about garages and MOTs.

CheriLittlebottom · 23/03/2020 21:09

Mine is booked for Thursday.

Going to drive it if needed. DH is an engineer and does all the servicing and maintenance anyway so we'll know it's not dangerous. Will obviously not be using it much under lockdown anyway.

Usernamealreadyexists · 23/03/2020 21:12

Got mine in at 5pm today as I was worried about this. I’m sure the 3 month break will be extended to cars.

SoloSolow · 23/03/2020 21:13

@DeadBod

So is mine. I'm getting a bit worried. I've seen on Gov.uk something that said they were reviewing the situation about cars and light vehicles. So maybe like public transport and heavy goods vehicles they may be suspended for three months.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/03/2020 21:25

Mine is due in May and I'm a key worker. Really hope they suspend it for 3 months.

LochJessMonster · 24/03/2020 10:56

FYI I rang a local garage and they are still open. Got it booked in for next week.
I have to drive up, leave the keys in the car, and walk away. They will wear gloves/masks and wipe down the surface. All the paperwork will be in the car. Payment online.

I have mine booked in later this week. The garage have confirmed the same process as lochnessmonster.

ComeTheFuck0nBridget · 24/03/2020 11:05

I had to take mine this morning. I think they will suspend them but they haven't yet so felt like I had no choice.

I had to put my keys down on a table at the garage door and step away, then they came and picked them up. Wearing gloves, I waited outside, then when everything was done exchanged keys and money on the table again.

I had a pack of wipes in my pocket and wiped down the car and handles and steering wheel and seatbelt etc

safariboot · 24/03/2020 12:39

I decided fuck it. I'm getting mine done today.

ineedsun · 24/03/2020 12:42

Just booked mine for this weekend

DeadBod · 25/03/2020 07:42

Update : our car had it's MOT yesterday. It failed but they sorted it straight away. The garage are carrying on until they are told not to.

billybagpuss · 25/03/2020 07:49

DCs did theirs yesterday used the process above then they disinfected the car when they got home. The thing that got me was the number of other cars on the road considering we in lockdown.

The garage had loads of cancellations ds was booked for yesterday dd for Friday we just took them both down and said no rush to get them back both done by 4.30

foamrolling · 25/03/2020 07:52

Garages are classed as essential businesses. If you need your car for essential journeys then you need to continue as normal and get it mot'd as there's no suspension in place currently. Keep an eye on gov.uk for any updates on that.

OldUnit · 25/03/2020 07:56

Although garages are classed as essential services many are independently run and many are choosing to close at this time, even dealerships.

I'd say enquire by phone as to wether you can get your MOT done, many are now by appointment only.
Garages (who I work with a lot) are now worried all and sundry will be turning up to have little jobs done just because people have time. That isn't fair.

OhamIreally · 25/03/2020 07:58

Mine was booked in for today (expires 30th) but the garage cancelled. I had booked with an official Fiat garage as car is lease to buy but think I'm going to try to find somewhere local now. I've been worrying about this for months as I find stuff like this very stressful.

LochJessMonster · 25/03/2020 09:35

Update from government. 6 months suspension

Was just coming on to post that! That's a relief for a lot of people.

OhamIreally · 26/03/2020 16:02

Checked mine - was actually 28th so I had to go get mine done at some random local place.
