Using bra cups to make coronavirus masks

Working on the better than nothing principle.

Underwired bras, padded cups with a foam layer and an outside layer, a pocket for padding are roughly the right shape. Cutting off the elastic with the strap adjuster, separating the cups, trim to shape.

I read about doctors using salt water

www.google.com/amp/s/www.businessinsider.com/mask-coated-in-salt-neutralizes-viruses-like-coronavirus-2020-2%3famp

So I soaked coffee filters in salt solution, dried with a hairdryer. Inserted in the pocket or between layers.

Putting the underwired under the chin, sewing elastic from the straps at the sides. It was fast, and better than nothing.

I tied a bandanna cowboy style over my masked face, covering my nose to neck.

Currently jokes about looking like a tit...but...

As long as you remove carefully, wash mask in bleach, destroy coffee filter, it might just might be better than nothing in a pinch.

👍 How would I convince DH to wear one?! He’s currently happy not to go out apart from walking the dog and zero interaction with other people.

I needed a last trip to a shop, and figured I'd sacrifice an old bra and try it out. Noone noticed. There's a few people wearing bandana over noses

At the least it might give people a smile, I figure.

A Google said that home made masks are better than nothing. Obviously in addition to not instead of social distancing.

Could you link to where it said that OP? I'd like to read it too.

Like I said, better than nothing.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/24229526/

Methods: Several household materials were evaluated for the capacity to block bacterial and viral aerosols. Twenty-one healthy volunteers made their own face masks from cotton t-shirts; the masks were then tested for fit. The number of microorganisms isolated from coughs of healthy volunteers wearing their homemade mask, a surgical mask, or no mask was compared using several air-sampling techniques.

Results: The median-fit factor of the homemade masks was one-half that of the surgical masks. Both masks significantly reduced the number of microorganisms expelled by volunteers, although the surgical mask was 3 times more effective in blocking transmission than the homemade mask.

Conclusion: Our findings suggest that a homemade mask should only be considered as a last resort to prevent droplet transmission from infected individuals, but it would be better than no protection.

I am using sleep masks from all the plane trips my husband has had in the last few years. We have loads of them.I am well aware that they may not help but at least they protect somewhat when I touch my face especially when I'm at at the supermarket.

If I put a bra cup over my mouth, I'd not be able to see either 😆

I trimmed the foam down so it was shaped round my nose.

It won't save the world, and clearly no replacement for an n95, but there are no masks to buy.

I'd just need to cut 2 eyeholes out of mine. However I only own one bra and my back aches enough as it is without letting my mammoth boobs run free

DetroitLake · 23/03/2020 18:44

Swimming goggles over the eyeholes might be very fetching. It can enter via eyes too.

Finally, a reason to be glad that I wear glasses.

NameChangedToProtect1 · 23/03/2020 21:46

I kew that scuba kit would come in handy!... are you for scuba?

DetroitLake · 23/03/2020 21:50

Oh scuba gear would be great. Might need an armored tank for Walmart soon. It's not fun in there.
