Lockdown and non essential jobs?

If lockdown happens soon, which seems likely will non essential business have to shut? Has this happened in other countries or is any work that is still open exempt from the lockdown?
My Dh works in the construction industry and it’s still business as usual at the moment..

In Italy only food and pharmaceutical shops remain open.

In Italy they have stopped all non essential work

I have family who are in the middle of serious structural repairs to their home, which were started before coronavirus was an issue. If works are stopped now it will put the house at risk of serious damage (largely water ingress, possibly collapse) which buildings insurance won't pay out for.

Here's hoping that sort of construction work isn't stopped, at least before the critical phase of the work is completed.

Leather tanneries are still working away for a minimum

My DS is a key worker (engineer in food production) there was already a shortage of skilled workers. He does some overtime but exhaustion/dangerous machinery/driving are not a good mix.
If you have seen the factory programs then things like conveyor belts etc need fixing after breakdowns.

Dongdingdong · 23/03/2020 07:00

What will it mean for all the retailers still doing online orders?

applesand · 23/03/2020 07:03

He doesn’t work in that sort of construction and has said the public wouldn’t be affected if work had to stop but his company won’t unless forced to.
I just can’t see it being anything other than ‘advised’ right now, which of course will be ignored.

We are shortly to go into lockdown, and I believe things like construction will have to stop unless it is essential. Only essential services will continue.

applesand · 23/03/2020 07:34

I hope so..but I’ll believe it when I see it I guess

@applesand my DH is the same. Working on a new build construction site. Limited welfare facilities (one portaloo with no soap) and a boss who will keep them going out until the house builder closes the sites
