Looked this up earlier today, as DH had a lung infection a couple of months ago and I'm a bit worried about him. Not worried enough to contribute to the shortage of masks but something that bothers me enough to look for alternatives.
Apparently homemade face masks can reach approx. 73% of the efficiency observed for surgical masks (for viruses as small as covid)
I found the research summarised quite well here and Forbes has a good overview of "more tested" patterns.
They seem easy enough to make I figured I'd share the info in case it helps someone to stay safe.
