They’re showing 14,500 new cases today but it’s not on any news I can find

Aren't Germany only counting people with no underlying condition, I'm certain I read that being the reason their figures are low.

Batmanandbobbin · 22/03/2020 20:11

I think I had it? I’m not sure and I know I’ll probably get the don’t be daft you can’t have, everyone had that bug etc etc. But end of jan beginning of feb I got what I thought was sinusitis, which it could have possibly been, I was so ill and I’ve never been seriously ill before. My eyes burnt I had a bungled up nose under my eyes was full I had a milder cough and only a day or two of a temp. But I can remember I felt better for about 3 days, bar exhaustion, then it came back with vengeance and I was in bed for two solid days. Breastfeeding the passing child away. My partner at the time has a lot of visitors coming for China to his work who worked nearish Wuhan. But obviously I’m probably trying to trick myself because I have insane anxiety and invasive thoughts that I’m gonna get it and I will die leading my children Sad

And apologise my rant is nothing to do with OP Blush

Durgasarrow · 22/03/2020 20:11

There are several cases in my little town now.

Batmanandbobbin · 22/03/2020 20:12

Urgh awful spelling and punctuation too. Off back to reading news stories and trying to convince myself I won’t die Sad

Postspecific · 22/03/2020 20:13

We can’t got by test stats in the UK. Deaths is the only reliable data. From that, I generally go by Germany’s 0.3% fatality rate as they’re the most widespread at testing. So in UK, that equates to approximately 75,000 active cases.

Todayissunny · 22/03/2020 20:16

I saw the US numbers as well but they are showing 8000+ now instead of 14,500.
Interesting to look at in the numbers per million of population. I'm in Switzerland and our numbers per million are not far behind italy. Health system is coping really well.

mathanxiety · 22/03/2020 20:30

There’s no treatment for this so it’s pretty much just luck what the outcome is if you get it

No, it's not luck.

It's clear guidance from government about precautions, it's government measures to ensure social distancing, and it's availability of hospital beds, supplies, and ventilators that make the difference.

isadoradancing123 · 22/03/2020 20:32

Why, if it is true, are passengers from Rome, China and Iraq still landing at Heathrow

mathanxiety · 22/03/2020 20:37

I think we can take it as a given that those large urban areas in the US not reporting numbers like NY and NJ actually should be, and the hopeful numbers for some other cities are because of lack of testing, not lack of cases.

Bearbehind · 22/03/2020 20:41

Weirdly the numbers have dropped to 8,000 on the same website now........

It’s very odd

@Yeafortwo That’s a bit of a generalisation. I’m not sure where in India you’ve been but it’s a huge country with quite different ways of life from one area to another.

Lovemusic33 · 22/03/2020 20:43

The numbers really don’t mean much in the way of “what way the virus is going”. Italy has a lot of deaths but they also have a larger population of elderly, over all people in Italy live much longer die to their diet and life style so this could be the reason why they have such a high death toll?

Also a lot is down to testing.

Mummyoflittledragon · 22/03/2020 20:44

We will continue to be low with the zero testing policy. The US announced they were rolling out wide spread testing. This is the result.

defthand · 22/03/2020 20:45

They’re testing en masse, unlike us. Good for them.

endofthelinefinally · 22/03/2020 20:47

We are only testing people in hospital. Of course there are thousands more people who would be positive if tested.
My neighbour is very ill with exact symptoms. He is self isolating, as are his wife and children, all in the same house. He has been refused a test.

mrbob · 22/03/2020 20:49

I think the numbers are all over the place as everyone has said. However if you look at news, the fact that the countries who are in dire situations just now are the IS and Italy with the UK trailing them (obviously who knows what is happening in Iran) The places where doctors and nurses are opening talking about running out of equipment and being overwhelmed are the places I would worry about. Although more of us may get there (In Oz here)

The US has completely missed the boat and is in for a really really bad time. The way the healthcare system is run, the lack of any socialist ethics, the massive numbers of people living in poverty and in prisons, the narcissistic and arrogant leadership are all coming together.

SecretWitch · 22/03/2020 20:49

We have five cases in my town now. They are centered on a nursing home just down the street from me.

The number of positive tests in my state of Massachusetts has risen to 646 with two deaths at this time.

mrbob · 22/03/2020 20:49

And the positive tests in the US are the tip of the iceberg, not some quick capture of lots of their cases

defthand · 22/03/2020 20:50

The US has more ICU beds than us per capita and they are intervening earlier, IMO. We are in for a worse time than them.

endofthelinefinally · 22/03/2020 20:52

So many people in the US have no access to health care.
Health insurance is tied to jobs, so it is only going to get worse.

BunsyGirl · 22/03/2020 20:53

The US will be hit the hardest. I have been saying this for weeks. The disparity between rich and poor, the lack of affordable healthcare and the huge homeless population. It’s a disaster waiting to happen. The disaster is here.

MYL1980 · 22/03/2020 20:54

It's so much easier to get a test now. I'm in a major US city. Last week you had to already exhibit symptoms and had contact or travelled to a known outbreak area. Now there are drive though testing centers popping up around the city. The numbers are sobering. I think a full on shut down for over a month will be our only hope mitigate the exponential spread of this virus.

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/03/2020 20:59

I live here. You are making a sweeping statement that is simply not true.

There is a state government as well as a federal government. What happens here is going to vary state by state.

BrexpatInSwitzerland · 22/03/2020 21:00

I'm a puzzled by the figures: at least for Switzerland (where I'm based) and Germany (special interest for professional reasons) the numbers reported are significantly above the ones published by the authorities.

Now, Germany, I understand are reprting on a delay (tally also doesn't match yesterday, mind) - but the fatalities for Switzerland for today have been higher than what the federal government reports, and have remained unchanged since before the government last updated its figures. Noticed accidentally as I was listening to the news as I was also looking at these figures and decided to look where the conflicting information came from.

Not saying the data is necessarily false - I'm saying there's a mismatch with official figures in some cases and to apply a degree of caution.
