Covid
WTF has happened in the US today?
Bearbehind · 22/03/2020 18:45
They’re showing 14,500 new cases today but it’s not on any news I can find
www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/
Knocksomesense · 22/03/2020 18:46
I've been monitoring this site for about 8 weeks. It's extremely sobering
Knocksomesense · 22/03/2020 18:47
Husband said it's like the football league and we are moving up the table
Idontkowmyname · 22/03/2020 18:49
Uk are in 10th spot. Not a top ten anyone wants to be a part of. The USA are in 3rd spot with only China and Italy
DBML · 22/03/2020 18:52
Didn’t they just order a lot more tests and have they started proper mass testing perhaps?
NemophilistRebel · 22/03/2020 18:54
The positives can’t be taken seriously as for example we know we aren’t testing a lot anymore so actually we are probably far higher up there than anyone
Russia right now are probably in number 1 spot for cases and deaths but if they don’t report any stats then they won’t be
Poland had 3000 suspected cases back mid feb before Italy but they weren’t reporting officially and now they aren’t testing a great deal
TKAAHUARTG · 22/03/2020 18:54
There is a lot of testing going on in the US. My results came through today. Negative but probably the worst cough I have ever had. I am very congested and phlegmy though so I did not think it was CV.
SouthernComforts · 22/03/2020 18:55
I've been checking this site every day. If you sort by active cases it shows we have almost the same number of active cases as China, we will have more tomorrow, they are moving down the board and we will move up
INeedNewShoes · 22/03/2020 18:57
I imagine its because they've ramped up testing in the US.
YgritteSnow · 22/03/2020 19:03
You all sound quite knowledgeable. Going by those figures when do you think the UK is likely to peak?
NemophilistRebel · 22/03/2020 19:05
I’m not too sure we can agree that Italy has peaked yet
And we keep teetering on small number of deaths
You can’t go by confirmed positives for peak guidance but deaths per day and even that isn’t 100% reliable as some deaths are now going down as Covid if the person was on death bed but then caught it at hospital
And likewise some people are dying most likely of Covid but without a positive test so won’t go on the figures
NemophilistRebel · 22/03/2020 19:07
Also - talking of Italy, we can’t compare. We really aren’t following the same line and hats due to reasons in my post above
We also can’t compare to China as no other country in Europe has taken those measures and they won’t be out of the woods for a long while with the way they have dealt with it
Jaxhog · 22/03/2020 19:08
I ignore the 'total cases' statistic because it depends on who and how many you test. This varies very widely. The only figure to watch is deaths. US deaths haven't gone up by the same margin, so I would guess they're doing a lot more testing than they were.
bluebells1 · 22/03/2020 19:11
Does anyone know how India is doing better than most? Have they gone the S Korea way?
Homkaismycat · 22/03/2020 19:11
Czechia it’s good too. They got medicine and will use it..hydrocholochin.
Bearbehind · 22/03/2020 19:13
I also wish I was in Germany.
Why?
There’s no treatment for this so it’s pretty much just luck what the outcome is if you get it
It’s also been claimed that Germany are not reporting deaths in line with other countries
Most countries seem to be counting victims if they’ve died and have tested positive for CV, but had other illnesses, ie, it might not be the CV that killed them
Rumour is Germany are doing the opposite
AbsentmindedWoman · 22/03/2020 19:13
According to the governor, here in New York we are testing more than anywhere else in the world now.
13% of the infected people are in hospital, the rest self isolating and recovering at home, this is down from as high as 19% last week - so I think that means milder cases are being found.
flyingspaghettimonster · 22/03/2020 19:14
The us must surely have the most cases. Because it has been here probably since early February and nothing was being done to prevent spread. We started taking it seriously mid february from watching world news, but if people were only paying attention to US news they wouldn't have been too worried.
I'm absolutely sure there are thousands of cases here that aren't known. Testing was suppressed so much that the scale of infection won't come out till later. Even now, not enough people are taking it seriously. I made plans for isolation at end of fev with my neighbour, we did a huge shop after discussing what we would need etc... but since then her whole family go out daily, often several times, for no good reason. They don't understand why my original plans to share isolation time with them aren't going ahead... but they have done nothing to quarantine themselves despite having risks like 4 over 50, 1 heart op kid etc. Drives me mad. The teens keep having friends over or playing in street with all the other kids.
The only sign that any kind of measures are in place is the lack of traffic during rush hour. My husband's commute it 20 mins right now instead of over an hour. A lot of people are working from home, but not staying at home. People still nip out multiple times a day for lottery tickets or cigarettes etc.
I think america will end up worst hit because of the sheer stupidity of the people who refuse to allow anyone to curtsil their freedom, the lack of health insurance etc and size of the population.
Yeafortwo · 22/03/2020 19:16
I strongly suspect that India will be down to non-existent testing. I've been there a couple of times and it's utter chaos in terms of people living on top of one another.
ShellsAndSunrises · 22/03/2020 19:16
Italy are supposed to be overindexing on deaths for the same reason, @Bearbehind. Anyone who dies who tests positive is put down as a CV death, even if that wasn’t what killed them.
itwasalovelydreamwhileitlasted · 22/03/2020 19:17
Yes but if you order it by active cases per 1m population we are 41st on the list which is also important although I suspect skewed by the lower numbers of tests being performed
