Sanitary towels, tonic water why ????

I'm not the panic buy type so maybe that's why I don't understand why are people hoarding fanny pads and tonic water. Is there something I don't know ? Quinine is not a magical cure, we're not running out of sweetener and if you're using sanitary towels instead of toilet paper, buy the panty liners not the extra flow night towels.

Tonic water was gone here from about a week ago. V weird, as there’s still plenty of gin. I’ve got a soda stream and get the tonic water concentrate so I had no need to stock pile. I noticed the tampon shortage today, I have two boxes (bought in BOGOF in Boots about two weeks ago!)which will last me two months so will old off buying any more until then.
M and S today was very well stocked of most things except fresh meat.

I was going to try the moon cup but I've read that if you have very painful cramps they can make it worse. I'll give it a go along with reusable pads, it can't do any harm. Shame there's no alternative to the tonic .

I’m either going to invest in a mooncup or make my own towels. There are a few patterns available online.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/03/2020 15:10

If anything cramps are reduced with a mooncup ime.

halcyondays · 22/03/2020 15:12

Buying 3 or 4 packs doesn’t necessarily mean you’re hoarding them, if you’re a mum with two daughters and some of you have heavy periods, you’ll get through a lot of them.

halcyondays · 22/03/2020 15:13

A lot of people think that using a mooncup reduces their cramps.

PicsInRed · 22/03/2020 15:17

If you go through a pack a month, and may need to isolate for 12 weeks plus, and relying on the army to bring you only basic provisions, then surely buying 3 or 4 packs makes sense.

People aren't "stupid". Peasants can do maths too.

Bouncingbomb · 22/03/2020 15:19

I struggled to get sanitary towels last week. I have been bleeding every day for about 18 months, tried all sorts of medication and an ablation and I was going to agree to a hysterectomy last week but my appointment was cancelled. So that’s three minimum a day every day, sometimes six or seven on a heavy day.

I am not the only person with periods in my house.

I have tried washable ones - too heavy on a heavy day and I don’t know when that will be. DD is freaked out by her periods (Asd) and uses god knows how many (too many but I am reluctant to make an issue of it bar talking to her as I have done for months).

I could only buy two packets last week, one in Sainsbury’s and one in Aldi, that was all they had!

So if I buy a few packets the next time I see them it’s because I need them not because I am panic buying.

GrumpyHoonMain · 22/03/2020 15:19

I would suggest you get some vitamin B1. It is the alternative recommended for people to avoid malaria who can’t tolerate anti-malarial drugs. Might help. Don’t stockpile it though!

LuxLFC · 22/03/2020 15:19

I go through 2 packs per period. A lot of women will have heavy periods. The govt. warned people who are high risk would be asked to stay home for 12 weeks - everyone who started to take it seriously went shopping so obviously the shelves were going to be empty if everyone shops at the same time. I don't think everything can be classed as panic buying, especially after Bozo's first press conference about people dying.

Bouncingbomb · 22/03/2020 15:22

I agree Lux, his rhetoric didn’t calm anyone. I also think that the reporting showing empty shelves hasn’t helped.

Frlrlrubert · 22/03/2020 15:23

I go through 2/3 packs a month, so if I thought I'd need to self isolate for twelve weeks I'd probably need 8ish packs!

And that's now, I'd probably have needed double that as a teen.

mimbleandlittlemy · 22/03/2020 15:36

BlewTrew - a friend of mine has three teenage girls and herself in the house. How many packs would you allow her to get at any one time, given she says their cycles are pretty much all synced?

LonginesPrime · 22/03/2020 16:08

I'll give it a go along with reusable pads

Honestly, OP - the reusable pads look amazing!

DD15 has so far resisted all of my efforts to go sustainable with toileting, but even she was impressed by the reusable sanitary towels and said she'd give them a go!

Dd and I both have very heavy periods. I’m on at the moment, she is due any day. She takes medication for hers but a. It’s not helping and b. She’s worried as it’s an NAISD. DD can go through a pack in 1-2 days alongside wearing an ultra tampon. I can go through two packs per period.

cologne4711 · 22/03/2020 16:23

Sanitary towels - people are going to get in a couple of extra packets just to be sure that they don't run out

This. And some of us need the heavy duty ones. If I could just use any old brand standard size, I wouldn't have a stash because I could just buy whatever was available. As it is, I keep a 3 month supply at all times because I can't get hold of the night-time size without perfume very easily.

Number12 · 22/03/2020 16:24

Please don't rush into using a mooncup they have been proven to cause prolapse. Research first!!

Sexnotgender · 22/03/2020 16:27

I got a nice bottle of gin for Mother’s Day and struggled to get tonic to go with it.

ImRealHonest · 22/03/2020 16:29

If I was to have to stay indoors for 2-3 months, I’d look like I was hoarding Sanpro. I use a box of tampax per day for 5 days, plus maybe 5-6 pads a day. If I had to make sure I was covered for 2-3 months I’d look ridiculous buying 15-20 boxes of tampax and 5-6 packs of pads

lazylinguist · 22/03/2020 16:35

I'm baffled as to why anyone is baffled by this. People aren't buying extra of thinfs they think will be scarce in the shops. They are buying a bit extra of things that they really don't want to run out of if they have to self isolate.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 22/03/2020 16:47

Washable pads

How do they stay in your pants

Zacharyezrarawlings · 22/03/2020 16:55

bluetrlew I have 4 teenage dds. We are all in sync. Should we all be sharing out a single packet of sanpro a month to meet with your approval?

Amummyatlast · 22/03/2020 17:02

Rufus they have poppers. I find them more absorbent than pads/tampons and much more comfortable.

I moved to reuseables a few years ago and I’m glad I don’t need to worry about obtaining pads from the supermarket.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 22/03/2020 17:05

Ive had a little look at a website

But how do the poppers work...im really sorry im obviously being very stupid 😀
