Sanitary towels, tonic water why ????

I'm not the panic buy type so maybe that's why I don't understand why are people hoarding fanny pads and tonic water. Is there something I don't know ? Quinine is not a magical cure, we're not running out of sweetener and if you're using sanitary towels instead of toilet paper, buy the panty liners not the extra flow night towels.

Tonic water for gin!! Mmm gin.

HonestlyItsFine · 22/03/2020 13:18

Tonic water is because of the Quinine- idiots believe it will cure covid-19.

Sanitary towels, who knows? Surely 2-4 boxes is enough. And most sensible people already have 1 or 2 stashed.

wonderrotunda · 22/03/2020 13:20

Trump has ordered an ocean of a similar fringe to quinine I think...which caused many a raised eyebrow from his medical advisors...

BertiesLanding · 22/03/2020 13:26

You'd have to drink a truckload of tonic to get the same amount of quinine that's in a couple of tablets of chloroquine. Oy.

chipsandgin · 22/03/2020 13:27

I’m guessing with the tonic water it’s just because the pubs and restaurants have closed & thats where they’d normally drink G&Ts!? Imagine if tonic water were some magical cure, I’d be golden the amount of gin and tonic I’ve had over the years (user name based on my standard diet!!)..haven’t heard that urban legend and it’s clearly ridiculous.

As for sanpro, I guess it’s because panic buyers are brainless pricks and lemmings - same goes for loo roll etc, if some NHS frontline worker who is working in an increasingly terrifying environment can’t buy any tampax because the selfish fuckwits are hoarding it at their homes that’s really not ok. Shame on the panic buyers, there is plenty to fucking panic about right now but buying more than you need of anything is cunterey of the highest order...(& you know who you are).

TalbotAMan · 22/03/2020 13:30

There is some evidence that an anti-malarial drug called chlorquinine may have effect against Corvid-19 and there are clinical trials going on at the moment. As its name suggests, chlorquinine is a chemical based on quinine, which comes from a tree and is the classic flavouring for tonic water.

People who think that tonic water will protect or cure them are idiots.

theclangersbigplan · 22/03/2020 13:31

I don't think people are hoarding lots of sanitary products. Demand outstrips supply at the moment because while usually there's a steady stream of people buying as they need it, and the supply chain is used to meeting that demand, everybody is trying to buy all the things they will need for a couple of months to avoid trips to the stores.

bellinisurge · 22/03/2020 13:33

Tonic water is obviously for gin.

4forkssake · 22/03/2020 13:34

I didn't think tonic contained much quinine these days

Kraejka · 22/03/2020 13:39

The tonic water is because there were things going round on social media about quinine being a possible "cure".

Sanitary towels - people are going to get in a couple of extra packets just to be sure that they don't run out. If everyone gets 2 extra packets they will quickly be sold out.

I don't think it's particular intelligent people who are reading about it on facebook and buying it for that reason.

RHTawneyonabus · 22/03/2020 13:43

I have ordered a bit more tonic water recently. I realised we have several bottles of artisan gin and nothing to drink it with! I have four bottles so not exactly a crazy hoard.

LizzieMacQueen · 22/03/2020 13:45

I thought the sanpro shortage was because the manufacturers were experiencing difficulty obtaining supplies; these supplies were being redirected to make face masks.

Bluetrews25 · 22/03/2020 13:47

People ARE hoarding sanpro. I saw a woman in Aldi last week with 3 packs of towels in her basket, she hesitated and then picked up a fourth. I hope she gets some help from a gynaecologist if she is bleeding that heavily!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 22/03/2020 13:50

Some people need 3 packs of STs, you clearly haven't had a very heavy period of you don't realise that. 3 or 4 packets is hardly stock piling.

BikeRunSki · 22/03/2020 13:52

I’ve ordered a bottle of tonic water, because I always do. I like to drink it in its own. The quinine context must be negligible though, as tonic water has never given me the hallucinations than chloroquine has.

LittleLittleLittle · 22/03/2020 13:53

Tonic water - for gin of course! I normally buy tonic water at 2-3 bottles at a time. Last couple of bottles I brought were before Trumps crap and they only had a few bottles left on the shelves. This is normal as they tend to restock the tonic water when there are a few bottles on the shelves.

Sanpro - people are buying it to ensure if they are on lockdown they aren't caught short. Also I have found that a certain supermarket no longer sells the sanpro I use, so when I go to one of the others or Boots I stock up.

LonginesPrime · 22/03/2020 13:58

They might not all be for her! I have two DDs and we all tend to be relatively in sync, so I often buy three packs at a time.

It's only this week that I've switched to washable ones (which are amazing, by the way, and beautiful to boot!) because I realised it's not sustainable in any sense to carry on using disposables.

MissDemelzaCarne · 22/03/2020 14:00

Fuck, I noticed there was very little tonic water but didn’t buy any.

stickerqueen · 22/03/2020 14:02

my husband managed to get a packet of sanitary towels in a corner shop but would only let him have one. Between me and dd we need at least 5 packs a month. Thankfully we are ok for this month and will worry about next month nearer to the time.

Zombiemum1946 · 22/03/2020 14:10

I'm not sure my charge nurse would accept me saying I can't come back to work because I have no sanitary towels. My colleagues are mostly post menopausal so there's little chance of pooling resources. Although the thought of saying to c/n I can't come back because I've sacrificed my sanitary towels so you can face masks does make me smile.

Yes! Noticed sanitary towels are low, picked up 4 packs for my daughter and I. I did get a bottle of tonic water but that's for my pink gin. Couldn't find any ketchup, who stockpiles ketchup? Just replacing my finished bottle.

SerendipityJane · 22/03/2020 14:15

Rather takes the edge off the "Tampon Tax" news ...

Zombiemum1946 · 22/03/2020 14:16

I do have just about enough to see me through next week, but sometimes it's heavier than usual. I also like to be prepared for the following month (I'll be back at work after sick leave). It's one of those silly little panics of being caught out. Dh is usually good at hunting them down.

@Bluetrews25 before I switched to washable pads (and thank god I have) I was going through 25 - 30 pads a day, for 3 or 4 days of my 10 day long period. that's the body form super long night time ones. So I would indeed buy several packs at a time, although the majority with an online shop.
