Would you continue to work? Inventory Clerk

I work as an inventory clerk. I collect keys from an estate agent and go to empty properties and do a report.

I then return the keys. I can do up to 5 properties a day.

I do check outs where families have moved out the day before. There could have been various contractors in the properties we visit within the previous 24 hours.

I work for about 8 letting agents and am very well regarded. People will still move over the coming months and inventories/check outs will still be needed.

I'm scared. I want to stay at home. My husband has high blood pressure and my daughter has Asthma.

If I stop working I risk my agents will not ask me back when this blows over. They may use another clerk.

I have built this business up myself over the past 5 years and would be gutted to lose it all.

None of the agents are open to the public, many just have one person working and handing out keys.

Just wear gloves! Your risk is from touching stuff then touching your face.

Personally, I would keep working on the basis that as OrganzaLopez says, the main risks are contact with other people or touching surfaces and transmitting infection that way; but I don’t live with anyone in a high risk group who I have to worry about. I think in your position I’d have to down tools, unfortunately.

As an aside, is good to hear that you don’t know any agents who are open - I was still receiving emails from agents I signed up with when looking to buy advising that they’d be open and doing viewings as normal, which seems unbelievable given the stress on only essential workers going out.

I'm conflicted as I know there are people out there working (key workers) and I take my hat off to them.

But I feel selfish continuing to be out and about.

These things I'm am doing are not life or death emergencies.

Well going to work was one of the four reasons you can leave your home OP.

Kinneddar · 23/03/2020 20:45

Noones going to be moving anywhere in the next few weeks. You're only meant to go to work if its essential. Yours isnt. Stay at home

Teddypops · 23/03/2020 20:49

It the diary is full for the rest of the week with people moving

Unlikely to be now. Everywhere has to close down. It's not optional. Your not going to get removal companies or van hire places open.
