Breaking news on Sky re asymptomatic patients

I had a pain inside my nose on Tuesday/weds which sort of felt like I was getting a cold as my nose was blocked. It's become a sinus-type headache and I've felt a bit more tired than usual. Since Thurs/Fri I have lost my sense of smell and taste entirely. I've had no temp and no cough, and I was going to call the GP on Monday to ask for antibiotics for sinusitis. A few hours ago a consultant has said that the loss of the two senses can be a symptom even without a cough/temp. I think there's still so much to learn about this virus. I'm now going to stay in and keep my family in for the requisite time, as I'm 95% sure it is it.

Scary, willdoit - I think the breathlessness is the biggest clue - most colds/flu don't have breathlessness as a symptom - except when you have such a blocked nose that you can't breathe properly - but that's very different feeling to actual breathlessness - the feeling that you can't get enough air in your lungs - which seems to be a big factor in CV19.

I had a few days of a dry cough and since then have had the feeling of a cold about to start in my nose and back of my throat. I can only describe it as a prickling, a feeling of slight inflammation but it has never come to anything. Last Monday I lost my sense of smell and taste. I have had an intermittent headache across my eyes and nose. It just feels odd, I can't quite explain the sensation, but I have assumed it is a time of year common virus. I have been keeping away from anyone and we have all been at home- been out for a walk on remote Northumberland beaches. DD has also had it. Neither of us has been ill as such and the symptoms have not got worse. I suppose we'll not ever know whether it has been it or not.

I think a hugely frustrating thing here is that so many people have had symptoms, but have no idea if they've had the real thing, because only hospital patients are being tested right now - some sort of antibodies test would be really good. But do we know for sure that you can't catch it twice yet?

IpeartreeI · 21/03/2020 23:48

We weren't tested. They only test if you're kept in hospital. Nobody has any way of knowing if the minor and moderate symptoms are the covid 19 or the flu. I've had flu and this felt different. This is more a chest based problem. Ds2 was quite poorly with his and I was worried and had to phone 111 as his 02 sats were down. We all still have coughs which are coming and going. Ds did complain that his eyes felt like they were burning.

To be perfectly honest I think lots of people are looking for signs they have already had it and only experienced mild symptoms as it is a way of self-soothing.

It lasted four weeks, had a truly appalling cough for all of that time. I was so out of breath I was taking ventolin to yoga class. A throat like knives. On/off fevers. No sense of taste or smell. Exhaustion. Yes, I suspect it was.
I am not changing my behaviour now as a result (I am in fact already in lockdown - not in the UK).

I'd err on the side of caution and isolste definitely but it's not unusual to lose senses of taste and smell during a heavy cold. I often do. I wouldnt bank on having had covid19, which some people i know are assuming, without testing. Which is why we need more testing.
