Breaking news on Sky re asymptomatic patients

I had a pain inside my nose on Tuesday/weds which sort of felt like I was getting a cold as my nose was blocked. It's become a sinus-type headache and I've felt a bit more tired than usual. Since Thurs/Fri I have lost my sense of smell and taste entirely. I've had no temp and no cough, and I was going to call the GP on Monday to ask for antibiotics for sinusitis. A few hours ago a consultant has said that the loss of the two senses can be a symptom even without a cough/temp. I think there's still so much to learn about this virus. I'm now going to stay in and keep my family in for the requisite time, as I'm 95% sure it is it.

Mine started off with some sinusitis, tingly throat, pain in arms and legs and feeling very tired. The cough came later. I also had an episode of abdominal pain and diarrhoea at the beginning.

Dh said he had a weird taste in his mouth as did ds2 who couldn't eat. I went off my food a bit and felt a bit sick.

haventaclueeither · 21/03/2020 20:43

Has anyone else had sore eyes? I have had a sore throat, body aches and headache for about a week. Yesterday lost sense of taste, had diarrhoea and eyes feel like I have been peeling onions constantly!

LuckyLuckyWoman · 21/03/2020 20:45

Xenia I've had a headache for a week, been in the same place every day. Wondering if it's connected, guess we'll never know unless other symptoms occur

yes i heard this and i have actually lost my sense of smell i mentioned it yesterday to my dh
if this is corona i hope this is all i get

Marieo · 21/03/2020 20:52

It could be. The reason we should all be isolating really and key workers tested regularly (it won't happen, but it should imo). DS was admitted to hospital a fortnight ago, we had phoned the GP who after hearing his symptoms advised to go in so they could listen to his chest, who then sent us to hospital to get checked out. His symptoms were shortness of breath, a fever, and a hacking and consistent cough; at times it was so savage it would make him sick, and he coughed throughout the night. No blocked or snotty nose. Once we were home we self isolated just in case, but thinking about it bloody glad we did as it sounds suspiciously like it could have been. Obviously it could have been a myriad of other things, but it does seem odd we werent tested or set aside in a different area. As I was worried about him I didn't really think at the time, but as we phoned the GP first and were honest about the symptoms I thought it would be okay to go in. If it happened now I would question it, as I'm sure they would.

CrocodilesCry · 21/03/2020 20:54

People need to stop scaremongering that they've had CV without a diagnosis.

If you have not been tested then you cannot say "well, mine started with < insert weird symptom >" - it's just dangerous. Stop it. Just stop it.

The usual coughs, colds and viruses are still in circulation. Without a positive CV test or an antibody test after the fact NOBODY knows if they have had it.

I can just see a bunch of people thinking they are invincible because they had sinusitis or a regular cold and going about their business putting themselves at risk and others.

Lovemusic33 · 21/03/2020 20:55

I have the lack of taste and smell thing too and a cough but have had the cough for a while, also had swollen glands, cough is a bit worse today and a bit breathless but oxygen levels are fine (I have a checker). Not sure if it’s the virus or not but am self isolating anyway now DD’s are off school and I’m off work.

Marieo · 21/03/2020 20:57

@CrocodilesCry but it's also good, a lot of people seem to think that they just have a cold, which they likely do; but they continue going about their business, shop workers into work etc because they've read that Corona is really, really nasty. Which it isnt for everyone. As there's no proof of herd immunity, those who believe they have had it and go about their business probably are unlikely to be up to date on what other people are saying anyway.

Marieo · 21/03/2020 20:58

And the vast, vast majority won't have a diagnosis as they aren't testing anyone out of hospital! It's better people err on the side of caution, as has been advised.

DowntownAbby · 21/03/2020 20:59

Respiratory infections often result in smell and taste being affected. It's not unusual at all.

All of a sudden everyone has decided to believe this one piece of unsubstantiated news and it's become fact that taste and smell loss are 100% indicative of SARS -CoV-2.

What will now happen is the same cretins who believe that Kelly-who-sells-bath-bombs-on-Facebook is suddenly an eminent virologist and public health expert, with her bullshit memes, will decide they've definitely had the virus because they couldn't smell their KFC and so are now immune. And there we go, they start ignoring the advice of PHE and they're off picking up and spreading this bloody virus about.

Marvellous.

socialistmamma · 21/03/2020 20:59

@IpeartreeI did you test positive?

Pollydollx · 21/03/2020 21:02

Remember that colds, sore throats etc are most likely just other bugs. My son has a cold laat week. Conjunctivitis and got hot two night in a row. My body was threatening a cold for three days and my chest felt dry. I got nothing else.

Im pretty sure it was a normal cold/virus.

Interesting about the sense of smell and stuff though.

I wonder if eventually we will all be sent these tests.

I doubt id have it anyway pretty much been home the last 6 weeks. I've had low iron and had a week or two on the sofa feeling exhausted 😔

adaline · 21/03/2020 21:02

On the BBC they said this is common with all respiratory infections and that it isn't necessarily a sign of Covid-19.

DowntownAbby · 21/03/2020 21:02

@CrocodilesCry exactly.

It's absolutely ridiculous that people are so damn stupid.

We really are fucked with this level of stupidity abounding.

Whenwillthisbeover · 21/03/2020 21:02

I lose my sense of smell and tase with every cold, I think it’s a bit of a red herring.

PotholeParadise · 21/03/2020 21:02

I occasionally lose my sense of smell with regular colds, so I don't think sense of smell can be a conclusive sign.

If you get cold symptoms, proceed as if it's Covid-19 and isolate. Once you've recovered, assume it was a cold and proceed as if you're still at risk of catching Covid-19.

CrocodilesCry · 21/03/2020 21:02

@Marieo No it's not good, it really isn't.

And people with any old cough, cold or strange viral symptom that doesn't fit with CV should also be careful.

We shouldn't be spreading ANYTHING around at the moment, so colds, chest infections - anything like that, people need to be careful and limit contact with others more than ever.

Not only for themselves (as if you're already fighting off any bug you immune system is under pressure so you don't want to pick up CV or anything else for that matter) but for others as well.

Wallabyone · 21/03/2020 21:03

Why would people think they are immune? There is no evidence yet to show that having it once (even if confirmed by a test) means you are immune? I think that it is important to know about any new symptoms, as up until now I had not thought it necessary to self isolate as I didn't have a cough or high temperature. Surely it's better for people to err on the side of caution and stay in?

OP posts:
CrocodilesCry · 21/03/2020 21:12

People need to follow the PHE advice. If this needs updating it will be updated.

And medical bodies and the media should be deferring to Public Health England and not spreading stuff about potential new symptoms as it dilutes the message and confuses people.

CanIHaveAPenguinPlease · 21/03/2020 21:14

Well quite frankly they need to be offering testing so people know. We are isolating here - for what?? At least if it was confirmed CV I could understand it!! I’m immunosuppressed & I’d like to really know if this is it!!

Evilspiritgin · 21/03/2020 21:14

I had all these symptoms in jan / feb, I’m still wondering if it was corona then? I live in a place where the Chinese like to visit Beatrix Potter

Marieo · 21/03/2020 21:14

Yes exactly Confused. I work with people who have been in with coughs, even temperatures but are convinced it's not Corona as they assume everyone is on death's door. It's far better than isolate on symptoms based on research, as this is, than assume it's all death's door stuff. Nothing to assume that people will then be running about believing they are immune. Just observing the behaviour I have seen and been around, happy to agree to disagree makes no odds.

Pollydollx · 21/03/2020 21:16

Also by us all staying away from life and people we could be making the world a healthier place in general.

I wonder if many cold viruses will be wiped out now. Also stomach bugs such as norovirus. If these things die out massively due to us not mixing then it's a huge benefit for next winter and less people getting sick with this disease still around.

jasjas1973 · 21/03/2020 21:22

I love coffee, always know when i'm really ill as i can't stand the taste....
bottom line is unless you've had a CV test, you really don't know, there are 1000s of viruses flying around during winter inc many corona ones, most of which will give similar symptoms to CV19.
