Has anyone recently bought a chest freezer?

I can’t find one anywhere! I had one on order with Curry’s but they contacted me to say they could not fulfil the order and that they have completely sold out. I have an elderly father in law who lives alone and I want to be able to batch cook and freeze him some meals while he’s unable to go out. But it seems I’m not alone with planning in this way.

Has anyone managed to buy one lately for under £300? I can only find expensive commercial models in stock, or local suppliers who don’t deliver to my area (Surrey).

Why can't you just take him the food?

Not easy, if you live 250 miles away, as I do, from your parents. I don’t have a freezer either.

I wish I'd got one when I was on the preppers board a few weeks ago, but they are expensive.

Yes, they seem to be sold out or have long lead times.
Have you tried Gumtree etc? Risky I know, but just a thought.

SuckingDieselFella · 21/03/2020 12:06

If he had a freezer you'd still have to drive 250 miles to fill it.

middleager · 21/03/2020 12:07

Oh sorry, saw you are 250 miles away.

Appliances Direct have some but pricey and wait times.
You could try his local FB page and put out a plea.

No, OP didn’t say they were that far away. I did. I’m in a similar position.

"Please sell me a chest freezer so that my relatives can fill it and then the shelves will be empty when other pensioners go shopping."

Something like that would go down well.

SuckingDieselFella · 21/03/2020 12:11

Yes daisypond I'm aware the OP didn't say they were that far away.

Try local independent retailers? One near me has 6 coming in this week they were inviting people to reserve via social media.

Yes, but I bought it late January. My DH thought I was a bit mad but figured we would use it. Today he's both grateful and relieved. We have two very fussy kids, one with lactose issues. I could see how this virus would spread....people think that it won't happen to them!

For what it's worth currys have an eBay shop, worth a look.

Why not an upright freezer? Much more convenient, especially if you're elderly.

daisypond · 21/03/2020 12:22

Any sort of freezer is hard to come by.

ChipotleBlessing · 21/03/2020 12:26

Get him an upright fridge freezer. There’s plenty in stock and they’re much easier for an older person to use.
