To ask where the "it's just flu" people have gone?

When people started discussing the virus on here a few weeks back, they would get ridiculed or told they were scaremongering as it was "just flu".
Those people seem very quiet lately.
Are there many still around with that opinion?

OP posts:

The way this has been handled is causing a financial crisis that will kill way more people than corona will. That worries me more to be honest. I'm worried about those who will be homeless, jobless and hungry soon. Unemployment figures are already going up and they will only increase in the next few weeks

Yes. The one thing that is worrying me more than anything else (other than my mother going stir crazy with loneliness) is the effect on the economy. Really scared we might get hyperinflation.

MarginalGain · 21/03/2020 09:23

I was curious whether there were people on here who still think it's overreacting and scaremongering as that seemed to be the general consensus.

Your entire thread is a bit of hindsight bias, though, isn't it?

There have been many novel viruses that have threatened life as we know it, that have been effectively shut down.

Swine flu, bird flu, SARS, MERS, and so on.

malificent7 · 21/03/2020 09:24

Admittedly when i heard about the virus i thought it was " just flu" and overhyped by the media. Flu is very nasty.
I am not ashamed to admit that i did not see this coming. Influenza does kill more people but as we dont have a vaccine for this, tough measires are necessary.

Cam77 · 21/03/2020 09:25

Some of them have turned into FB jokers, posting daily Lols about the virus, eg endless toilet roll memes and so on. Now, I agree a bit of fun poking and humor is good for spirits but some people are way over the top and I think were in some cases the “stop overreacting everyone” posers. The odd joke is fine but a global pandemic is pretty poor source material for an endless stream of Lols.

tabithasweet · 21/03/2020 09:28

But it is like the flu in the sense that it's dangerous for vulnerable people but most people will come out the other side unscathed, but obviously it's unlike the flu because there is no vaccine and it is incredibly catching.

Ellapaella · 21/03/2020 09:30

I suspect there's been a record number of name changes over the last few weeks.

sensibleoroverthinking · 21/03/2020 09:30

What a stupid thread. You might as well just write "I told you so" and have done with it.

Lockheart · 21/03/2020 09:31

I don't think it's "just flu" but by all accounts the majority of people will experience similar symptoms as a bad cold or flu and will not be seriously ill. Assuming they're not asymptomatic entirely, which also seems to be quite a large number from current reports.

The difference in this virus to your regular winter flu is it's rate of transmission and the effect on the elderly and those with underlying health conditions.

vegas888 · 21/03/2020 09:33

To be honest I think I would risk having the coronavirus where in about 80% of people symptoms are mild than risk losing my house, my job and my sanity, especially as I have children too.
The papers as usual are scaremongering the shit out of everyone.

Isthistrueor · 21/03/2020 09:34

Tbf, it is just like the flu symptom wise for 80% who catch it so they weren’t wrong.

Lefkosia · 21/03/2020 09:34

I'm taking precautions, social distancing, washing my hands a billion times a day and if I had symptoms would self isolate. I still think that the panic in some people is completely out of proportion in this country. The vulnerable people who are at risk need to be protected but there arent really that many confirmed cases or deaths - obviously because most people are following the guidance, I get that, I am doing it too. I see an awful lot of hysterical people on here though if anyone even suggests sticking their nose out of their front door they start screaming at them. Just calm down.

MarginalGain · 21/03/2020 09:35

You mean, so that they can seem as smart as people like you and the OP? Really?

vegas888 · 21/03/2020 09:36

“The difference in this virus to your regular winter flu is it's rate of transmission and the effect on the elderly and those with underlying health conditions”
So isolate those who are most vulnerable and make sure they are not losing out financially and let the rest of us carry on.
Tom Hanks is no youngster, he is diabetic but is recovering ok.

vegas888 · 21/03/2020 09:39

Rate of transmission, does anyone actually know anyone who has been diagnosed with it.
My aunt is 89 this year and doesn’t even have the regular flu jab.
Let’s just crash the world economy and sit by and watch

middleager · 21/03/2020 09:40

The thing is, as mentioned upthread, it wasn't an unknown. We were privileged to have a Crystal Ball - Italy.

Even 2 weeks ago when my boss laughed at me, Italy was crumbling.

So when Matt Hancock said a week or so ago that this was "unimaginable" I wanted to throttle him.

Nofoolfornoone · 21/03/2020 09:41

A guy I know didn’t believe any of it, for weeks we’ve been arguing over it as he insists there’s no virus and it’s a 5g cover up. My advice to make sure he has food (he buys food meal by meal) were laughed at “there won’t be a shortage of food as there is no virus” On Wednesday he came to do my gardening and he wanted to him me me hug , I asked him not to and he went off on one about how I’m not going to get sick and I should just not worry”

Yesterday he messaged me - he can’t get food anywhere. He’s not sure what to make of all this. And then finally, he wishes he wasn’t alone “at a time like this”

I took a while. But I think the penny has dropped

Wannabangbang · 21/03/2020 09:42

Watch the video on sky news about Lonmbardy, this is no regular flu at all. There are now people of the ages 30 and 40 newly being critical. So the people are getting younger.

People that have died are all in make shift morgues in coffins. This is massive don't risk your lifes, stay home if you possibly can.

vegas888 · 21/03/2020 09:43

In Italy nearly a quarter of the population is over 65, the UK is around 18%

MarginalGain · 21/03/2020 09:44

There will be people in the 30-40 age bracket who require intensive care, but they are exceptional .

This is not a normal flu, it's a novel virus, no one is disputing that.

vegas888 · 21/03/2020 09:45

At the end of that report the doctor wasn’t even wearing a protective face mask or gloves. If it’s so highly contagious and airborne why was that?

Isthistrueor · 21/03/2020 09:46

The flu does kill an awful lot of people every year, mostly elderly. The only reason it doesn’t kill more is due to the vaccination.

Coronavirus is primarily killing the elderly just like the flu. 80% of people who catch it will just feel a bit naff for a few days, just like the flu.

vegas888 · 21/03/2020 09:49

The figures for coronavirus are eye-watering. But what is not clear - because the modellers did not map this - is to what extent the deaths would have happened without coronavirus.
Of course, this will never truly be known until the pandemic is over, which is why modelling is very difficult and has to be heavily-caveated.
But given that the old and frail are the most vulnerable, would these people be dying anyway?
Every year more than 500,000 people die in England and Wales: factor in Scotland and Northern Ireland, and the figure tops 600,000.
The coronavirus deaths will not be on top of this. Many would be within this "normal" number of expected deaths. In short, they would have died anyway.
It was a point conceded by Sir Patrick at a press conference on Thursday when he said there would be "some overlap" between coronavirus deaths and expected deaths - he just did not know how much of an overlap.

Dzundza · 21/03/2020 09:54

Mqybe he already had it. Many health professionals will have been infected in the early stages and are cured now.

vegas888 · 21/03/2020 10:02

It’s wonderful they are keeping their spirits up and they do an absolutely fantastic job and should be paid far more than they are but what about all the social distancing we are told to do and where’s the masks and gloves?

Nofoolfornoone · 21/03/2020 10:09

@vegas888 they only need gloves and masks when caring for patients with symptoms. Presumably none of them have symptoms or they wouldn’t be in work.

The distance thing I agree with. Although, we don’t know when it was filmed - could be prior to that guidance coming out. It was only this week I think althoug feels like a life time ago!
