To ask where the "it's just flu" people have gone?

When people started discussing the virus on here a few weeks back, they would get ridiculed or told they were scaremongering as it was "just flu".
Those people seem very quiet lately.
Are there many still around with that opinion?

The point of this thread is? We're all in the shit together - crowing about it isn't going to do much good, even if it makes you feel momentarily better. And I wasn't one of the 'it's just flu' people, for what it's worth.

SebandAlice · 21/03/2020 08:35

Yes I remember a non-medical NHS worker who started a thread basically saying flu was worse and everyone should get a grip. Pity MN deleted the thread.

ofwarren · 21/03/2020 08:35

Not crowing, just wondering if those people were still of the same opinion

I think a lot if people probably said this out loud to try and curb their own worries.

maa1992 · 21/03/2020 08:38

I said in January this wasn't a flu, my MIL and SIL are both nurses and they dismissed me completely. Both are now working relentlessly and are now completely concerned for their elderly family members and themselves.

DH said "it's just a flu, I'm fit and healthy I'll be fine" then became traumatised after reading about a 39 year old with no underlying conditions being rushed into hospital.

On my facebook an old colleague, a part time karaoke singer (who has another job that she will not lose) was fuming that Boris "shut the pubs for a poxy flu, what about my gig" and urged people to go anyway. This woman has underlying health conditions and would probably die if she got it.

Those people are still out there and are still just as stupid.

lljkk · 21/03/2020 08:38

Are you just trying to flush them out so you can shout sneer & harangue them, OP?

Canadianpancake · 21/03/2020 08:38

There were plenty on my local pub FB page last night, ranting about how ridiculous and over the top it all is. Incandescent with rage because the government are totally overeacting, and they should be able to make their own choices about whether they go to the pub or not, and there is absolutely no evidence that it is any worse than flu.

headinthedrawer · 21/03/2020 08:39

My GP told me 2 weeks ago she thought it was a media thing and "flu kills lots more people....it just doesn't make the headlines!"Things have escalated since then though. It has been an unknown.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 21/03/2020 08:40

They’re out panic buying toilet roll and pasta.

CrowleysBentley · 21/03/2020 08:40

They've all been trapped under their piles of last minute panic bought food.

ofwarren · 21/03/2020 08:41

Not at all @llkj
It just seemed to be the dominant view on here for a while and I haven't seen anyone say it for days.

OP posts:
Ihateselfishbastards · 21/03/2020 08:42

They are all hiding behind their toilet paper and pasta stashes.

JonHammIsMyJamm · 21/03/2020 08:43

At the beginning of all this, the stats looked like it did have similar mortality rates to seasonal flu, so people weren’t unreasonable in their thoughts. However, obviously the information available to us changes every day and we know much more about it than we did three weeks ago, last week, even a couple of days ago. People’s opinions change as the situation unfolds and the information available to the public changes.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 21/03/2020 08:44

I'm still a bit on the fence tbh.

I think the actual illness is "flu" for most people, I also think that there's a bit of a query over the accuracy of some of the figures.

Having said that I do accept that it's more contagious than "normal" flu and the fact that there's no vaccine makes it different.

wanderings · 21/03/2020 08:44

I think part of it is that the media has a habit of crying wolf. Disaster was promised in the form of the millennium bug, swine flu, foot and mouth, to name but a few. So this time, many people thought “it’s just the media nothing things up, as they always do”. I haven’t even seen the headline “misery”, which is often used for things like rail strikes, bad weather, etc.

Barbies97 · 21/03/2020 08:45

What a very depressing and horrible thread! "I was right" ... well good for you!

delilahbucket · 21/03/2020 08:45

They are all too hung over this morning after being in the pub last night. Like dp's sister and her mate 🙄

wanderings · 21/03/2020 08:45

Bigging, not nothing.

wehaveafloater · 21/03/2020 08:46

A friend of mine is a GP and their opinion is that we will all get this at some point, it's just a matter of when. The measures set by govt. are merely to stagger the admissions so that the nhs can try to cope. It was crumbling before all this started. So not only are govt now trying to prop it up from that they are also trying to enable it to cope with what they know will be an enormous task ahead for a long time to come. Yes lots of people thought it was just flu to start with - lots of people didn't have all the facts. The facts are now emerging and people are ( hopefully ) now realising the severity and unpredictability of this virus . You aren't automatically ok if you are young or fit or religious !! It's going to wipe out huge amounts of people globally which is incredibly sad.
But those left will be the ones who will need strength to carry on.

Good luck everyone. We are going to need all the luck we can get.

LemonSqueezy0 · 21/03/2020 08:47

A few people on facebook said this was an overreaction and would all blow over pretty soon. Out of the 5 most vocal Only one has addressed their previous comments so far. They had said it was nothing to worry about. They posted last night to say that ok, there may be something in it... The others have either maintained their stance or gone quiet. One has been made unemployed because of it, lost their house attached to the job, and the next few months, if not years will be very difficult. There's no crowing, it's sad to see. I do wish people would take it seriously though.

PurplePonderer · 21/03/2020 08:47

About a week ago my GP drew me a little sketch to show how it wasn’t as bad as flu, because I seemed ‘a bit worried’ about it. If this has taken some medics by surprise I guess we can’t really blame the general public for being in the same boat.

lazylinguist · 21/03/2020 08:48

It's hardly surprising if the people with a more optimistic view become less so as the situation worsens, is it, OP?

I wasn't one of the 'it's only flu' crowd at all, but I agree this is a goady 'I told you so' thread.

aurynne · 21/03/2020 08:48

Considering that nobody knew much about the virus to start with, and that even now information changes drmatically in a matter of hours, I cannot blame anyone who under or overestimated this situation. I am sure it is very easy to blame someone in hindsight.

ofwarren · 21/03/2020 08:50

Not goady at all.
Genuinely interested if people are still of this opinion at this point in time.
