Travel Insurance - any use?

Me and DP are camping/hostelling around West Aus and have been told our flight home now won't be til June at least. DP was working remotely on a contract but his bosses company is now in trouble and they cancelled it after his last invoice. We've got my savings but given my industry has completely fallen over since being here I'm not confident of getting another job for ages when back and need it to pay my rent. Bit worried, especially if a lockdown meant campsites and hostels close as we'll struggle to find facilities to wash etc. Has anyone had any joy claiming on their travel insurance for needing to stay longer than planned? I haven't got enough signal to hold on the line with them at the moment and my policy doc doesn't seem to mention being stuck!

It'll depend on the terms of your policy and the reason for the extended stay, so flight cancellation might be treated differently to a lockdown situation.

I thought there were still some flights out of Australia for the moment?

There may be but I think we'd have to buy two new tickets because Qantas have swapped everyone's flight for a credit so I don't think they're obliged to get us onto a new one sooner. Someone we know who bought their own ticket had to camp out by the airport for four days to get on the first stage of the connection back to Europe and we need to sell so much stuff (including our transport) just before we come home. Given we've both no jobs at the moment it seems like it's better to stay put but as I say the concern is losing the washing facilities. Disease outbreak doesn't seem to feature on the policy at all, unless you actually get sick yourself. All v.confusing!

My gut feeling is you're more likely to get assistance with flights home, if flights are still happening. But it's just a guess really. When were you due to fly home?

My parents are flying home from Australia in early May and their flights are not yet cancelled (Emirates flights but booked through qantas). Could all change mind.

End of April. Qantas have said no international travel til June 😯 Seriously considering trying to get some farm work.

Hope you get something sorted. Have you contacted your insurance company?

BennyVegas · 22/03/2020 10:04

Have you already accepted a credit from Qantas? I wonder if it's worth seeing if they can transfer you to an emirates flight? They codeshare after all

No, we're still in two minds about the implications Sad Heading South again today and back to WiFi so I can scrutinize the T&C's. Contacted travel insurance and they just said to phone their helpline so I'll get round to that too when I have clear signal for about 6 hours!

Looks like emirates suspending all their flights now any way

KittenVsBox · 23/03/2020 08:00

Emirates have 13 destinations still active -Australia and UK are 2
You cant transit through Singapore.
Australia are urging citizens to return, I suspect they are gearing up to shut the border.

Your options will shrink further over the next few weeks. When does your Visa expire??

BennyVegas · 23/03/2020 08:09

Suspended from the 25th March is the headline I saw

Mine is okay but DPs expires when we were due to leave, end of April. Another thing to look into!

News Release states suspend MOST routes on 25th.

I'd check the Visa overstay issue. That might be the biggest implication.

turnandfacethenamechange · 23/03/2020 22:28

Turns out we can't stay at the place we thought we could stay. Fuckedy fuck fuck fuck. 😯
