Just curious. Friends seem to think it will all be fine again by May, I kind of feel like we will be lucky if we are “back to normal” by Christmas.

And by “this” I mean businesses shut and social distancing etc

Minimu 12 months with fall out for 3 to 5 years if not beyond. I feel sorry for the exam students this year with all the restrictions and changes BUT I feel more sorry for next years batch who will have missed a massive chunk of their syllabus - not a couple of weeks. They will have to catch up on assessments which were happening this year plus all the stuff to get through next year - not sure online learning will cut it to be honest

Economically this is going to fuck an already fucked generation of pensioners. Mentally I am not sure this generation of adults will ever be the same. Survivors of the virus will need long time therapy for the legacy mentally and physically, relatives and friends of survivors the same.

At the moment the only people doing well out of this are the supermarket owners.

HollowTalk · 20/03/2020 23:22

It'll take a while for everything to get back to normal, though. My son was planning to get married abroad in November and I doubt whether that will happen now, as it's in a country which is only now starting to get affected, and it's a very poor country so the repercussions are potentially really dreadful.

NettleTea · 20/03/2020 23:24

China only doesnt have new cases because its still pretty much on lockdown.
they have a massive population outside wuhan who are completely lacking immunity. It just needs to spring up somewhere else and it will be off again

NettleTea · 20/03/2020 23:25

but to answer the question - 12 months. or whenever they get a vaccine

Olawisk · 20/03/2020 23:26

Why are people putting things will never be the same again?

I’m curious, I don’t really get why people think that unless they are literally about to shut down a business / lose a loved one.

Life will just carry on as soon as we are out of lock down.. places will open and people will go back out again.

HonestlyItsFine · 20/03/2020 23:27

Depends how quickly they can find an effective treatment. If they can develop something that works- and reduced the need for ICU stay- then it will be fairly quick. If not, then it will be whenever a vaccine is available.
I hope one of the treatments in clinical testing works. Everything crossed.

colouringinpro · 20/03/2020 23:27

I think it will be at Least a year before we get anywhere near normal. Not quite sure how to stay sane...

SapatSea · 20/03/2020 23:27

China has removed restrictions as there have been no new cases(apparently) but there could well be a second wave a few weeks after everything goes back to "normal" and people are mixing more in crowds again. We need to wait and see.

HonestlyItsFine · 20/03/2020 23:28

At the moment the only people doing well out of this are the supermarket owners

And the CEO of Andrex.

Megan2018 · 20/03/2020 23:30

I think it will peak by Summer, improve by Autumn then peak again in Winter unless effective treatment or vaccine found before.

Normality in terms of social restrictions will come long before economic. That could take a decade.

PicsInRed · 20/03/2020 23:31

DennisReynolds war, because both Donald Trump and Xi Jinping fucked up and are trying to divert their people's fear and anger by pointing finger at the other having deliberately released the virus. China and the West have been circling each other for years, China hasn't built its blue water naval capacity for warm summer cruises. South China Sea etc.

Let's hope I'm wrong. I hope so, this is plenty enough for now.

covetingthepreciousthings · 20/03/2020 23:31

I guess because this is such a massive unprecedented event in all our lives, it's hard to know what it will be like after. Personally I'm unsure things will be the same, both in a positive and negative sense..

People are getting the chance to work from home where possible, this may continue into the future - flexible working might be less frowned on.

Children's lives won't be the same again either I don't think, they're about to go through massive changes from possibly home schooling, to not socialising.

When we come out the other side, what will be left to reopen? Will the independent businesses all survive? We visit so so many of our local ones, and I'll be heartbroken to lose them after this.

ChipotleBlessing · 20/03/2020 23:31

There’s no chance this will lead to war within the next couple of years. No country will have the energy or resources.

Sostenueto · 20/03/2020 23:32

The only way you will be able to judge how long is to keep close eye on what happens in China over the next two to three weeks as they gradually release the population from isolation. If there are no deaths in that time then the whole world can give a huge sigh of relief and calculate 3 months with total lick down. If the Chinese deathrate begins to rise again with second wave of Covid ( which I think it will) then there will be worldwide panic because if a long period of isolation doesn't work than wtf will???!!? I'm praying hard that China has solved problem but those tiny unseen little shits have a habit of mutating and now the virus has crossed over from animal to human it will mutate to human firm and goodness knows what it will be like then!

Pixxie7 · 20/03/2020 23:33

About another 18 mths with peaks and troughs like turning a tap on and off with restrictions according to the experts.

WyfOfBathe · 20/03/2020 23:34

I'm guessing a reduction in measures over the summer, and things like school closures starting again in the autumn. Continuing to cycle for 12-18 or even 24 months.

If we don't get face-to-face classes at the beginning of Autumn term, I think the education system will struggle massively. Settling in new year 7s would be difficult over Google Classroom, let alone new foundation stage or year 1.

RhubarbTea · 20/03/2020 23:35

18 months, with a brief let up in the summer for about 4 weeks in August-ish before getting more restricted again in September and October.
I think the winter will be terrible. This isn't going away any time soon, for anywhere in the world.

Writersblock2 · 20/03/2020 23:35

I think we will see a break in restrictions around early to mid June. People will be able to work normally and everything will open up. Flights will resume. I think this will go in until around November and then some places will restrict again as a precaution going into the winter. Depending on how it responds then will determine how strict the restrictions are. I’m terms of total recovery I imagine 18 months or more. But most of us will be living pretty normally from summer.

TeaAndDarkToast · 20/03/2020 23:36

2 years

Sostenueto · 20/03/2020 23:36

The only one to benefit out of this is Mother Earth herself. Huge carbon reductions over Asia, water cleaner already in Venice. Mother Earth having a break from being choked to death from our emissions. Nature must be applauding. It's payback time!!!?

wonderstuff · 20/03/2020 23:37

Bloody hell I wish I'd not clicked on this, I'm mentally geared up for 12 weeks, that's depressing enough.

PicsInRed · 20/03/2020 23:37

ChipotleBlessing

WW1, Great Depression ... WW2.

Energy and resources can always be found, particularly when there's no other choice. We've certainly found some this past week.

PicsInRed · 20/03/2020 23:39

Anyway, hope I'm wrong.

WW2 went on for 6 years and frankly I think most of us are pretty done with this already. Hmm

CatAndHisKit · 20/03/2020 23:40

They've just this on the BBC news, there will on/off relaxing of measures so there are small peaks of the virus rather than one hige spike. I think from June / end of June there will be some relaxing. Especially as hot temps may well lower the virus intensity as with many other viruses.

CatAndHisKit · 20/03/2020 23:41
