With so many people in the house is there any way to extend or increase my broadband reach
KatyMac · 20/03/2020 21:25
It's on the top level with my provider but I'm guessing with everyone work from and being at home Broadband is at it's limits
Can I get a booster to make sure it reaches all part of the house or is there a more techy way to solve this?
Clymene · 20/03/2020 21:32
If it's not to do with bandwidth (amount of traffic) but coverage (area which broadband covers) yes you can get WiFi extenders. I have a couple in my house - they use the house's wiring system to extend the wifi into dead areas.

How do I (randomly) pick a good one on Amazon? Is there a brand or a feature I need to look out for?
KatyMac · 20/03/2020 21:37
Sorry I forgot to say thanks - I do think it's range as we have created a studio in the attic for the kids and the router is 2 floors away
Wingedharpy · 20/03/2020 21:38
Yes.
Disclaimer : I know nothing about technology.
But, I looked into this very thing and bought a TP Link range extender from Amazon.
Plug the master thingy (told you 😊) into a plug and connect wire to existing router.
Plug range extender (s) into plugs in/near rooms where you want the boost.
Brilliant.

Tp link do good power line adapters. Ones with ethernet ports are better but WiFi extenders work just as good
JayAlfredPrufrock · 20/03/2020 21:40
Bought an extender and it made no difference. We used to get WiFi coverage I the garden and the detached garage a few years ago. But no longer.
ShadyAcromat · 20/03/2020 21:42
TP Deco 5 mesh thing from Amazon. You get 3 extenders and also all the parental controls you could ask for.
We used to have tp link plugs for hardwired connections but the deco is the best invention ever.
KatyMac · 20/03/2020 21:47
thanks I don't need parental controls as the 'kids' are 22 and moved home because of the crisis (I planned food for Brexit for 2 carnivores and have suddenly had 2 veggies added!!)
TP link & TP Deco to look out for and one with a cable
ShadyAcromat · 21/03/2020 13:37
That link is just for an extra one, you need <a class="break-all" href="https://smile.[[//amazon.co.uk/dp/B071241G3R/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i_.HHDEb043ZQ25?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21" rel="nofollow noindex" target="blank">https://amazon.co.uk/dp/B071241G3R/ref=cm_sw_r_apa_i.HHDEb043ZQ25?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-21]]

thanks bizarrely I found an agro gift card from Christmas (we hardly ever shop there) bought exactly what we needed with better explanations and picked it up today - solves the problem!!
KatyMac · 25/04/2020 20:44
We have given up and are buying an ethernet cable!!
