Internet, phones...

Does anyone know if there’s government planning for what would happen in the event of the internet/phone network going down in part or entirely? (Power cuts, cyberattack etc.)

Do most people still own an old-fashioned radio?

That's a conversation for general Preppers like me. We are used to talking about these things in a practical non- panicky way.
There is no example anywhere in the world of this happening due to Coronovirus and, if I may say so, it's irresponsible to even suggest it. People are anxious enough.

SomethingOnce · 20/03/2020 19:03

Surely this will have occurred to people already?

Is there any evidence of this happening in other countries like Italy?

bellinisurge · 20/03/2020 19:08

Again, @SomethingOnce , lots of tricky scenarios occur to me as a general prepper but there has been no evidence of it happening in any similar country such as Italy.

I’m aware of that but I was interested to know what the planning is around disruption of that kind.

There was a booklet the government popped through our doors 10+ years ago which I think might’ve covered it, but it’s in a file somewhere.

And I’m not suggesting ‘due’ to coronavirus, but it wouldn’t make the situation any easier if it happened for reasons not directly related.

The COBR(A) meetings will be across this. Much of our electricity provision is automated.

bellinisurge · 20/03/2020 19:18

This is in the Coronovirus topic. Which clearly suggests your post thinks "due to". May I suggest you either ask MNHQ to move it to the Prepper topic and state very clearly that you do not seek to suggest this would happen due to Coronovirus.
Plenty of us preppers happy to discuss our power out provisions and plans generally.

Fab, I’ll be delighted for them to advise so we know the plan, just in case Smile

I’ve already asked them to delete if not helpful.

A certain number of analogue telephone exchanges remain to be brought into use if the digital network fails. There is pretty good resilience in the power network. I wonder if key workers self isolated vey early to ensure staffing levels?

In humanitarian disasters one of the first things they prioritise is getting the phone networks back up and running. The mobile network operators tend to have pretty solid planning for power outages / natural disasters etc. I'm not saying it couldn't happen but it shouldn't be top of our list of things to worry about.

Thanks both Smile

Better dust off the landline handset, then!
