Universal Basic Income for all now!

So many fall through the cracks of these measures announced by the government tonight. I am glad some are getting help but this means some will be getting up to £2500 a month for sitting at home when others will have no income at all, no housing security. Allowing such a huge amount of people to fall into destitution will create yet another tragedy on top of the coronavirus. We need a UBI for all now!

Please spare a thought for the self employed in flood hit communities of the Uk. They had an emergency fund. They used it up recovering from flooding . They maxed personal credit to survive and were shafted by insurers. Now most are living hand to mouth, by the day if not the hour.

£2,500 per month seems like a huuuuuge amount to me.

Nurses don't even get that much do they?!

mambanumber5 · 20/03/2020 20:52

It's not £2500 a month it's 80% of salary up to £2500. Many people will get much less. It's not clear what happens to paye / nics on that payment - does it roll up to be paid at a later date. Also, it's not clear whether companies that have held off making people redundant / laid off on no pay as per boris' request will actually qualify. It's all in the detail that hasn't been released yet.

All that said, on the face of it it is a great proposal and may mean we get to survive.

More will follow for the self employed I think. If
You are affected by this get emailing your MP and be very vocal about your situation. It is somewhat understandable that the government is being reactive at the moment but unlike usual decisions are being made and implemented very quickly.

Yeah £2500 is the potential of gov program.

UBI is still the best and fairest way to solve this income crisis.

Does anyone think that it could still happen?

Therollockingrogue · 20/03/2020 21:44

@Greenbutterlfy566 no i don’t.
They’ve made it crystal clear with a big massive FUCK YOU to the self employed.

DanielleHirondelle · 20/03/2020 22:21

Yes, it's a great idea.
