Unemployed looking for work NOT currently claiming Universal actedit

Would appreciate some advice on my current situation.

Left my employment 2 years ago during a bout of severe depression. I had quite a large payment from my employer (not redundancy more like 6 months in lieu of notice plus a lot of accrued holiday).

I have been living very frugrally off the payout I received whilst doing some studying and unpaid volunteer work to enable me to get a qualification / experience to help me change career.

I started applying for jobs around 6 weeks ago as my money had started to run out and I’ve got the qualifications I wanted now. I’ve had a few interviews but nothing successful yet.

However, now the shit has hit the fan and nobody is taking on anybody at the moment. I’ve contacted local supermarkets and job agencies in the last few days but so far not found any work. The area I live in has high unemployment so temp jobs are being snapped up as soon as advertised.

If I apply for Universal Credit, how long does it take to come through? Am I likely to be eligible for it? I don’t have any savings to fall back on now. I’ll be going online this evening to have a proper look at the website but just wondered if anyone could give me some info in the meantime.

I just googled it, you can apply online (best do that now) and they'll give advances if you qualify

There’s urgent appeals from supermarkets to help too, Tesco & Iceland are the ones I remember.

Otherwise it’s 5 weeks until your first payment usually, but some people can get an advance that you pay back later.
