Just that really.

OP posts:
Snorkelface · 20/03/2020 22:55

Norway is paying their self employed 80% of the average of their last three years earnings.

janeskettle · 20/03/2020 22:56

Renters are always shafted, what's new?

Nobody seriously thought conservative governments would protect renters in any meaningful way, surely?

janeskettle · 20/03/2020 22:57

Selfish, nasty bastards

Lots of 'em about, it seems.

BBCONEANDTWO · 20/03/2020 22:58

Am I missing something????? Don't self employed get any payments at all?

zsazsajuju · 20/03/2020 23:05

Self employed people pay less tax than those employed. If they want the same benefits, fair enough but they should be paying the same tax.

As for calling people who are potentially losing their jobs “selfish, nasty bastards” well words fail me.

WwfLeopard · 20/03/2020 23:09

We’re all going to pay for this, with inflation and the massive deficit when its all over, so we should all get equal support. It’s a joke, My income is down, my outgoings are up 😭

mement0mori · 20/03/2020 23:09

This is how today's Telegraph are reporting the benefit:

Freelancers and the self-employed have just been granted equal sick pay rights in a huge package announced by the Government to support workers through the coronavirus crisis...

Workers without the safety net of an employer will be receive benefits worth the same amount as statutory sick pay (£94.25 a week) should they contract the virus

It's the should they contract the virus part that worries me.
Also presumably anyone who has savings over £16000 won't be eligible anyway as most benefits have a savings limit.

Juicyfrooty · 20/03/2020 23:10

The 80% of employed peoples wages wint even be means tested either will it? So there could be people with tens or hundreds of thousands in the bank still receiving it while the self employed will be on the bones of their arse.

There might not even be work to go back to after all this, it's going to be a nightmare.

Goawayquickly · 20/03/2020 23:12

That’s another good point, the salaried will get help regardless of savings. The SE won’t.

The80sweregreat · 20/03/2020 23:15

The self employed need to write to their MPs and get together to make a stand. I don't know how but something needs to be done.
Use social media.
Good luck to you all. I really do care as I know people in this situation.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2020 23:25

Benefits are usually intended as a safety net only for those who have nothing else,

which is why for most benefits you are expected to use up your savings first

Benefits also aren't intended for people to keep up the same standard of living they might have had on a previously high income
e.g. huge mortgage or private school fess

They are for basic needs, for those who couldn't otherwise pay for those needs

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2020 23:27

It looks like self-employed are being treated rather like the unemployed would be

whereas employees are being treated differently,
because it is in fact really their employer who is receiving this money, to be able to retain their workers

That is the big difference

mement0mori · 20/03/2020 23:34

I accept that, and that is why the same should also apply to the 80% payments for employed people. Throwing 80% of income at someone who has a lot of savings is something that we will all have to pay for in increased taxes in the long run. The point is that it is not fair to guarantee the wages for all employed people regardless of savings whilst means testing SE people. Let's at least be fair.

Knowhowufeel2 · 20/03/2020 23:42

My dh's company employs over 30 people. In order to not lay them off, he's taken an immediate 50% pay cut, which will mean we'll struggle, but he's responsible for these people and wants to do his best for them so this government announcement really felt like a kick in the teeth.
If he loses clients or they don't pay we will lose not only the business, but our house too.

MrsMGE · 20/03/2020 23:46

The Govt is announcing new measures daily. It's likely they'll announce a package for self-employed and renters soon, it's probably quite difficult to figure out what kind of support and how much is required. I'd wait a bit longer before getting worked up.

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 23:48

@zsazsajuju I called those with the 'pull the ladder up' attitude selfish, nasty bastards and I stand by what I said.

They're happy to watch the SE plunge into poverty (whilst still finding a way to moan about WFH and getting 80% wages themselves) and, on the other thread at least, basically telling them to suck it up and be grateful.

What is that if not selfish and nasty?

Juicyfrooty · 20/03/2020 23:51

mrsmge I really hope so, keeping everything crossed

R1R2 · 21/03/2020 00:04

You self employed pay slightly less national insurance so go get fucked - MNetters

Opendraw · 21/03/2020 00:09

I’m gutted so frustrating we make up 15% of the work force and yet we are always forgotten I feel. The government never do enough to look after sole traders :-(

Opendraw · 21/03/2020 00:12

__**Self employed people pay less tax than those employed. If they want the same benefits, fair enough but they should be paying the same tax.

that is absolute bollocks sole traders gwt nothing really and no sick pat no employer topping up our pensions jeez

Rhayader · 21/03/2020 00:13

Im confused. Do people get 80% of their wages it can their employer claim back 80% (but pay the employee 100%)?

I didn’t watch the press conference today - first one I’ve missed.

UC flaw re self isolation Looks like they havent updated their systems.

Bahhhhhumbug · 21/03/2020 00:16

My DH is in the building trade, self employed and going to work in a city everyday on a maintenance contract in blocks of flats so lm terrified of him bringing the virus home. I was laid off from my part time job last week as the self employed boss said Corona virus meant not enough customers to pay him let alone me. Our other income is from renting out a house and the tenants have managed get social housing for less rent obv.so are moving out next week. So basically if dh stays at home if virus spreads more which he should be doing now tbh but we would have no income whatsoever. Truly fllen through the net in this house. We're both in ouf early sixties

Bahhhhhumbug · 21/03/2020 00:17

fallen

Opendraw · 21/03/2020 00:20

@r1r2 less NI how do you figure that. I pay the same tax and NI as anyone else perhaps benefits can be had as a vat payer or a company but non VAT registered sole traders like me get forgotten about ALL the bloody time so feck off to you thank you
