Alcohol consumption

Will drinking say a couple of glasses of wine at the weekend weaken my immune system too much to fight the virus. By couple I mean around one and a half glasses. I'm tempted this evening, but don't want to take risks. I'm 50, don't have an underlying health condition, generally quite healthy and robust, don't succumb to illness usually, but obviously Covid19 is not like any other virus.

Seriously ?!

squishedgrapes · 20/03/2020 16:34

Well I've not seen any information about it so what's wrong with asking?

I’m limiting my intake. And tbh it leaves a sour taste at the moment anyway.

SilverySurfer · 20/03/2020 16:37

I'm increasing mine Hmm

dementedpixie · 20/03/2020 16:38

I'm going to kill it from the inside out Grin. I'm having my usual friday night wine tonight

Northernsoullover · 20/03/2020 16:38

Alcohol does supress your immune system but I would imagine that amount isn't going to make a huge difference.
I became really ill with a virus last year after a boozy weekend away. At the time I knew how dreadful I felt was due to over indulging combined with a virus. I haven't drunk since. But it was an awful lot more than a glass and a half of wine I regularly consumed.

WobblyAllOver · 20/03/2020 16:40

As tescos didn't deliver my alcohol free beer I am cracking open the alcoholic type tonight Grin

DystopianPanda · 20/03/2020 16:42

Damn, that's my plan scuppered to make this shit show more bearable Gin

janelmac · 20/03/2020 16:51

I'm upping my intake. We're going to pour ourselves a drink and have a little toast to good health for everyone each evening. Something to look forward to if we're at home for 12 weeks or more. I'm imagining us as a bit like Jerry and Margo in the Good Life!

okiedokieme · 20/03/2020 16:55

I'm increasing mine, apparently quinine could be helpful so it's a g&t for me! Grin

Flymetothetoon · 20/03/2020 16:58

I'm with Silverysurfer 🍷

Frownette · 20/03/2020 17:02

It's not a large amount OP, it'll be fine.

lazylinguist · 20/03/2020 17:03

Why would having a glass and a half of wine damage your immune system?

HairyFloppins · 20/03/2020 17:04

Mine's increasing. DH has a shot of Tennessee moonshine each night as a preventative measure.

SuperlativeScrubs · 20/03/2020 17:06

With the amount I have had to work, with the amount of stress this has put on me, my colleagues, my ex husband, my family...

I am definitely going to be having a glass bottle of wine when I get paid

WhatHaveIFound · 20/03/2020 17:08

The problem for most parents is that there's no such thing as a school night any more.

DH and I will probabaly share a bottle of wine tonight but we aren't drinking any more than usual. He has however just bought his mum a box to keep her going through lockdown!

squishedgrapes · 20/03/2020 19:23

The reason I worry is because I have read somewhere, don't remember where so can not quote, that alcohol consumption can cause upper respiratory problems, but I suppose that is with heavy consumption. I used to have a bottle a night habit, so I do worry.

Maybe my anxiety is heightened and I'm over thinking, but alcohol consumption within the recommended limits is low risk, rather than no risk.
