So the schools are closed...but not really. Many children whose parents are designated as key workers will attend school so teachers will attend to look after them. No time table, no structured school day and children aged from 4 to 16 , in a designated school ,with staff who are not child care specialists in most cases. They are subject specialists with a range of skills appropriate to passing on specific knowledge. In addition we hear that schools will stay open in the holidays. Will teachers be paid extra to take on these extra hours?
Teaching is already recognised as one of the most stressful careers with a very high dropout rate. I fear it is about to get much higher.
I am long retired from teaching but I am afraid for my younger colleagues and for the children they will attempt to ‘mind’.
