Not allowed to work from home

Hi all, just seeking a bit of advice really! My partner works in an office based job for a manufacturing company. He and a number of others within the organisation can do their jobs from home. However his employer is refusing to allow anyone to work from home. On Tuesday the company advised that they would only be paid SSP if they tested positive for Coronavirus, however thankfully this was changed to meet government SSP guidelines yesterday. They are however still refusing to allow high risk individuals to work from home as well as anyone else who can physically do their work from home. This is despite issuing a statement yesterday that said “work from home, where possible. Your employer should support you to do this”.

He is concerned that his employer is doing nothing to mitigate the risk of Coronavirus - they are still expecting everyone in the office, still having face to face meetings containing a number of individuals, yesterday someone came in whose partner was displaying symptoms and one of the directors wasn’t aware that if this is the case then the entire household should also be self isolating.

Is there anything my partner can do?

Is he a member of a union? If so he should seek advice from them.

Unfortunately not. He has just spoken to HR and they won’t let him work from home as he’s not classed as vulnerable. Problem is they aren’t letting anyone that is classed as vulnerable work from home either and people are coming into the office with symptoms so all employees are being put at risk. According to HR, they have read the government guidelines extensively though Confused
