Covid

Friend fighting for life

My friend, healthy 38 year old man, has had a fever of over 40 degrees since Sunday and very sick but could not be admitted to hospital because temperature was not at 41. Wednesday morning was struggling to breathe - his wife called an ambulance - it took 5 hours to get to him. Central London. The paramedics said is likely covid but because his oxygen was ok they still wouldn't take him to hospital. He nearly died last night - the ambulance finally took him to hospital early this morning and he is now in ICU under general anaesthetic hooked up to machines and fighting for his life. This is a healthy young man. Please please isolate - this thing is very real and randomly lethal.

That poor man

Unfortunately, I don't think people are going to take this seriously until the government announced a full country lockdown.

And don't get me wrong, I really don't relish the thought of a lockdown - but people aren't listening.

There are a lot of people who think if they are fit healthy young it will be mild.

This is awful. When will people take this seriously?!

@Justtheoneplease people will start to take it seriously when it's people they know dying or being admitted to hospital, when it's in front of their faces. By then it's too late.

I’m really sad to say, until people start to see this happening in their own circles they won’t listen. A lot of us have been trying to sound the bell for weeks now as to the seriousness and have been flamed, abused, called every single name under the sun.

I really hope your friend makes a recovery soon, it must be terrifying. Stay well.

I don’t know your friends case but there was a case in Spain where a 20 yr old died. Just before he died, he was also diagnosed with leukemia. I suppose that was the underlying illness. Very sad

I’m sorry your friend is critically ill.
Unfortunately people don’t seem to realise that this is exactly the stresses that will be put on the NHS.
The usually fit and well younger people will be on ventilators up and down the country while the sick and vulnerable will die - medics will prioritise people like your friend and your aged 60 plus mother / father with health issues will die. Or your children / younger family members with serious health issues will die!
When will people listen - this will absolutely touch all of us in one way or another.

It has been a huge shock - how bad is the system if it takes 5 hours for an ambulance to reach him and they won't admit him to hospital? I am terrified not only for him but what is to come for the country.

His wife is not allowed to be with him because it's suspected covid.

It's not just millennials spreading it - he's been extremely careful as he has a daughter with a chronic illness. London needs to be shut down.

What a terrible experience for your friend. The only way to stop it happening to many more people is to lockdown NOW!!

To be fair, when people are in ICU they restrict visitors most of the time. It’s crap for his wife, but he won’t be at all aware. She needs to keep their child safe from contagion too.
I wish anyone who ends up in hospital with CV a speedy recovery.

This millennial has self isolated since the weekend and has been social distancing for two weeks prior to that because she's pregnant (long before government advice said we should) so how's about we all watch our mouths?

OP, I'm so sorry to hear about your friend. I truly hope he recovers quickly. Thank you for sharing the story, I think we all need to see the human stories in this.

I'm fairly convinced its not millenials spreading it, certainly not round here. I think it's old people, over 60 who won't curtail their social lives!
My mother included. Really sorry to hear about your friend.

So sorry to see this, hope that your friend recovers quickly. I can't understand the London mentality, my small town is a ghost town today - sad to see but the right thing to do...

Awful news to hear. I really hope he makes some improvement today and a full recovery. The ambulance response times and lack of access to treatment are going to be a terrible problem and make people reaching hospital much sicker than they need to be. Stories like this one bring home exactly how serious this is. Sending love Flowers

I agree London needs to be shut down. People are still not taking this seriously, it’s not “just a cold”, 100,000+ people have died from this worldwide, it wasn’t “just a cold” for them. The amount of people carrying on as normal is shocking, many believe they can do what they like as they are not at risk, it’s selfish.

We are not all going to die if we don’t go to the pub for a few months, don’t eat out or don’t meet with friends, the sooner people start staying in the sooner this thing will go away.

first of all thank you for posting.
It's people like you who will help to get the message across. Like the lady in hospital on the metro clip.

I'm so sorry for your friend, he is in my prayers.
