Redundancy process continuing

Earlier this year, our company announced that it was restructuring and the proposed job lose would be 50 plus employees.

It started a Collective Redundancy process that is now coming to an end and plans appear unchanged.

However the world has moved on dramatically in that time and Covid-19 is now having an significant impact on the economy. Vacancies are being placed on hold and people are losing their jobs as there companies can not continue - meaning that those at risk will struggle to find work.

I guess legal they can continue, but ethically? It feels so wrong when it is not crucial for the business survival- just streamlining and cost savings. I am so angry, but not sure I have the right to be? Would you take it up with the Executives?

Plus they are also going to imply we are all Key Workers under the government list (some of our staff definitely are), when we can work from home and are not essential. I think I may get pressured to send the kids to school! I can’t take unpaid leave as I am losing my job soon.....

Not sure what section this should go in - but as it is relating to CV it is going here!

Most companies restructure to save money. With the coronavirus, they'd certsinly go ahead with the restructure. Some people are losing jobs BECAUSE of the coronavirus, so I'm not sure why you think it would save yours.
Redundancy is a business decision. Nothing to do with ethics.
I understand it's a tough blow to take but that's how it is.
Surely you will be getting redundancy pay though right?

I understand it won’t save my job, but they could pause the process for a while. The industry we are in will still have a demand what ever happens (Social Care).

Yes I will get some redundancy pay but it won’t last very long (I am the main earner).

I just feel a bit scared about how hard it might be to find a new role - there was a lot of competition before, it will just get worse.

By the way - I understand there are many in much worse positions right now and I feel so sorry for them. My complaint is the lack of empathy from the company.

Thank you for the reality check - I needed it before I steamed into work. Better to get it out my system here!

I work for the local authority and we are apparently still going ahead with the planned restructure which will equal redundancy in our team. I know what you mean- yes the world doesn't stop because of coronavirus but we could all do without something else to worry about! Thanks
