The List of Keyworkers is here

The long-awaited list of keyworkers who will be expected to continue to send their children to school is here:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-maintaining-educational-provision/guidance-for-schools-colleges-and-local-authorities-on-maintaining-educational-provision

Tbh it seems that it would have been quicker to list people who aren’t keyworkers. It’s going to be way more than schools were expecting and I’m not sure how we’ll cope.

I think it’s a good list... It needed to be comprehensive and take account of all those roles essential to keep the country operating, otherwise people would inevitably be saying “what about me!”

Also, it is still a minority of children who will need to be in.

hopeishere · 20/03/2020 07:15

It quite clearly says if children can safely stay home they should. More than once. This thread is the definition of wilfully obtuse.

It's apparent however that unless compelled to do something people won't comply. Hence supermarkets saying there were quotas for certain items. People could not be trusted to be sensible.

I know one mum her DH is a key worker she works from home she's considering sending her kids back because she can't control them it would be easier for her.

I know someone else. Very well off. Husband in finance so they could send their kidsif they wanted.

It needs to be both parents first. Then take it on a case by case basis.

MrsTumbletap · 20/03/2020 07:15

@plum100 they won't be getting any teaching at schools either. They will all be bundled together in mixed classes/year groups and sat in front of a computer or given a worksheet. There will be no education, no decent structure, no learning. The kids will hate it as they won't be with their friends.

We are unsure how we will feed them as the kitchens may not run.

It will be a skeleton staff in most schools. Yesterday so many of the staff were crying I'm not sure how many will be even be in next week.

Keep your kids at home they will be far better off.

LemonGingerCakes · 20/03/2020 07:17

Here we go

But don't teachers get paid over the holidays normally?

No. Teachers are paid for £195 days of the year only. This is salaried out over 12 moths. They have to be available for work for the 195 days, meaning that the holidays are unpaid. Schools are closed, but teachers are still working their normal hours.

LemonGingerCakes · 20/03/2020 07:17

195, not £195

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 07:22

Teachers working over Easter is asking them to work two extra weeks without extra pay.

A school I know has offered pay or toil.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 07:22

Bloody hell. Simply listing call centre workers makes no sense. It should have said call centre workers essential to public services.
Lots of call centre workers are selling things. They are not essential workers.

Davincitoad · 20/03/2020 07:23

Any other teachers wondering how we are going to do this and also sh*t scared? Back to classes of 30 and can’t socially distance. Before the teaching bashing starts- we all love our jobs but it’s becoming harder and harder to feel safe and do the right thing. Expectation to go into work for these children, Mark set and feedback on for those at home, workload Is double the usual. actually maintain some sort of sanity and pretend like it’s all ok. Loads of parents going to send kids in because they don’t want them at home. When this starts to get more wider spread wouldn’t you want your kids to be safe? If they are in contact with hundreds of children a day that’s hundreds of points of contact for the virus. Evidence also coming out that 20-44 year olds who get is 20% need ICU. That ain’t good odds?

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 07:24

I don't believe schools will be full, attendance was drastically reduced in our LA this week.

RedToothBrush · 20/03/2020 07:25

I'm looking at the pictures from Bergamo and wondering how many would still class themselves as essential after seeing it.

Bil and sil are both front line NHS staff. In theory my nieces can stay with us. Whether they want to be 100 miles from each other is however a different question. I've offered. I'm very worried. What happens if one or both parent becomes ill? Without proper PPE this is a genuine risk. Schools aren't open 24 / 7.

I really hope parents think about their options and what really is essential.

Barbaraanne22 · 20/03/2020 07:25

Yep. So much for social distancing. That list is 2/3 of our school at least and we are working with reduced staff numbers so big groups!

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 07:27

Also my understanding from the schools I know is that the teachers who are wfh/self isolating do planning, marking & the skeletal staff provide the childcare.

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 07:27

where possible

Davincitoad · 20/03/2020 07:29

A lot of schools are just telling all staff to go in. But then with kids planning groups of 20/30 even if numbers are low so staff are still being exposed to excessive social contact. I was told I couldn’t wear PPE as it would scare the kids

Davincitoad · 20/03/2020 07:30

And also expressing this via a nice meeting in the hall of all 150 staff together.. anyone see an issue with that!

ineedaholidaynow · 20/03/2020 07:33

Schools want vulnerable children in, they don’t want them falling off the radar. Our schools are setting up a system where families of vulnerable children will be contacted regularly if their children don’t come in.

Carbcraver · 20/03/2020 07:34

My DH is on the list, I’m not. I can (and am) WFH and the kids will be home with me. If they were younger, nursery age maybe, I might have utilised the provision to enable a full days work.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve considered sending them just so they are not home with me but think I’m taking the piss a bit if I do.

It will be a struggle, how can they refuse someone?!

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 07:36

the thing is we want the NHS, the food supply, utilities, IT & banking infrastructure, and emergency services to function so childcare does need to be provided to facilitate this.

PhoneTwattery · 20/03/2020 07:37

My middle child has an ECHP and is disabled.

Only ONE of our EHCP students is disabled. None of them NEED to be in next week except the child of a key worker - but they’re all coming in for “routine”. I don't class routine as essential during these unprecedented times. These students all access the curriculum in mainstream classes with minimal TA support. I’m shocked that parents deem it safe to send them in rather than socially distancing them. THIS is babysitting.

I am more than happy to supervise children of key workers.

BlueGheko · 20/03/2020 07:37

So call centre staff but not veterinary professionals? The majority of whom are women. This is going to have a huge impact on animal welfare.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 07:38

@moochpooch No one is disputing that. We are saying the list is far too wide and that it should be if both parents the child lives with are essential workers.
Usual bloody mess from Boris.

Hercwasonaroll · 20/03/2020 07:38

@LemonGingerCakes Schools are being given funding for the holidays. You should be paid extra for it.

Secondary we aren't expecting many. Perhaps 50 out of 1000. Mainly from the lower years where parents aren't comfortable leaving them at home.

The list is long but reasonable. The government have thought about the services they need to keep society functioning. There is clearly an expectation that if you can keep your child at home, then you do.

Schools should be turning away parents who they know don't work or work not in one of these categories.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 07:39

@PhoneTwattery I don't understand some parents.

DanielleHirondelle · 20/03/2020 07:40

Such a broad list but vets (not just for farm animals) should be added in my view. The very special bond with our pets is going to be even more precious in the weeks ahead, including the link between helping with stress and mental health. There is a petition underway on change.org for this if anyone is interested.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 07:41

@Hercwasonaroll You think all call centre workers is reasonable? Including those selling credit cards for example? Really essential workers.
