I work in retail, and everybody is worried sick about being sacked

OP posts:
HerLadySheep · 20/03/2020 08:43

I'm laid off on no pay until who knows when! Hopefully there will be some help for people like us announced today

Feelingfestivenow · 20/03/2020 08:46

Yes, yesterday......no pay other than what I have done this month

WaxOnFeckOff · 20/03/2020 08:47

My sister works in a cafe and been laid off, she's applying to the supermarkets but she's over 60. Also single so needs to work.

ChrissieKeller61 · 20/03/2020 08:51

Go on LinkedIn... 40000 lost their jobs on Tuesday

wheresmymojo · 20/03/2020 09:00

I was already between jobs (contractor) but it's impossible to get a new contract.

We're on our last month of money now...

Spacecadetagain · 20/03/2020 09:03

My business has literally gone down the pan overnight .
My DS who is an apprentice chef has been laid off . Oldest DS has lost his job for good. Ex H has been asked to take a thirty per cent pay cut and hours reduction

wheresmymojo · 20/03/2020 09:12

Also other people I know:

  • Friend's sister who did marketing for travel companies
  • Friend's DH has been told all to take a pay cut or unpaid leave or redundancies
  • Friend runs a small cleaning company and is significantly down on income and not sure of future
  • My DH is a personal trainer and down to one client (so £270 a month!)
AddressLabel · 20/03/2020 09:17

Not me, but neighbours dad is a bus driver and has been laid off.

shopaholic85 · 20/03/2020 09:23

My SIL has. She is self-employed and was let go by the college she was working for.

RhodaCamel · 20/03/2020 09:28

I’m a PA for a disabled lady. I work 3 days a week and take her to a day centre. The day centre is currently still open (although I have no idea why as all the people there have underlying health conditions). It’s only a matter of time before it shuts then I have no idea what’s happening. On the odd occasion the centre shuts I usually take my lady to the cinema or out shopping etc but obviously that’s off. Don’t know what is going to happen or how I’ll pay my bills.

hoolahoolahoop · 20/03/2020 09:33

I'm self employed on a contract so feel like I've lost my job as won't be earning for months now. Really worrying financially but trying to think of the bigger picture. Health is more important. But having a roof over your head is important too!

MrsMGE · 20/03/2020 09:38

OP & everyone else on this thread, Sky News yesterday reported that Morrisons, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl are also hiring. Morrisons is looking for 3,500 people. Appreciate this may not be what you normally do for a living and a temporary job as well, but hopefully it will help tie you over at this difficult time 💐

rowyaboat · 20/03/2020 09:42

Self employed. Lost so many customers. One remains. £40/week to live on

meredithgrey1 · 20/03/2020 09:42

I know of about 60 people laid off yesterday (almost all of the people DH works with, and almost all of the people at a company I used to work for). DH's job safe for now but they've said probably only until the end of April. None of these jobs are retail or hospitality.

BuckingFrolics · 20/03/2020 09:50

DD lost her hospitality job in central London this week as the whole (modest sized) chain has shut

Barmcake · 20/03/2020 09:53

Both me & DH work in hospitality, DH laid off last week and has been applying to Asda, Morrison’s, care homes, etc, hopefully he will get something to tide us over. I work in a cafe that is trying to stay open for the time being but our days have been cut to try and keep everyone working, I don’t think it will survive beyond the weekend!

ceilihouse · 20/03/2020 09:57

Yep, my business is in dire straights, it's me and 14 staff on the dole,

applecrumbler · 20/03/2020 10:02

2 friends of mine already

DianaT1969 · 20/03/2020 10:19

I freelance for 2 sectors. Both were hit early with cancellations. Margins are fairly small in both, so cash flow problems immediately with small firms already bust. Workers and employers got through low season and were expecting spring and summer trade to pay off debts, including credit card debt. Lots of co-workers now applying for UC as our final wages were mid-February.
Empty bank accounts and debts with interest, while council tax, mortgage, rent and utilitity payments are still being deducted. Both of my sectors had been slightly hit by Brexit previously and I was trying to diversify when this hit.

ladypete · 20/03/2020 10:39

Yup, I’m an actress. All the theatres have been closed so my current show and my future show (offer accepted, contact signed, script had been sent and we were all ready to start rehearsals soon) have both been pulled. Should have been employed and earning a good wage until November and now... nothing.

FairfaxAikman · 20/03/2020 13:25

DH is NHS so we should be fine from his side. I'm in the media and we are all wfh from Monday. God knows how we will juggle that with caring for toddler DS. Let's just say DH's boss is more forgiving than mine.

PIL usually have him but they are high risk and are avoiding contact as much as possible.

WhiteChocTwix · 20/03/2020 13:50

I was temping for a charity, but the plug got pulled on that Monday while Boris was doing his press conference. That's me at home for a few weeks. DH is working from home and is super busy so we're ok for now...

bigchris · 20/03/2020 13:59

bigchris · 20/03/2020 13:59
