I work in retail, and everybody is worried sick about being sacked

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/03/2020 02:17

Two of DD’s friends have lost their jobs in recruitment.

EmeraldShamrock · 20/03/2020 02:20

Yes on the 15th of March temporarily without pay.

turnandfacethenamechange · 20/03/2020 02:37

DP lost his job. I quit mine three months ago and finished 1 week before the entire industry I work in totally fell over. We're both stuck in Aus on non-working Visas for the foreseeable so we are going to be BROKE Sad

Bookworm83 · 20/03/2020 04:05

I work in tourism. I'm starting my maternity leave today and worried I won't have a job to go back to afterwards!

CappyCapCap · 20/03/2020 04:19

My dp hasnt been let go. But theres no work. Its annual leave or unpaid.

Tbh, it's worked out. He is having ds, now school is closed. I am the higher earner. I am still working. We can survive on my wage, assuming I stay in work.

At work we are taking it in turns to work from home so only one person per department is in at a time. So I could look after ds while I work. Though having DP here will make it easier. Especially the days I go in.

Toomanycats99 · 20/03/2020 04:23

@Lifeaback in my area I have seen adverts for Tesco Asda and Iceland as well.,

sofato5miles · 20/03/2020 04:28

My boyfriend is a pilot and was laid off on Monday.

soundsystem · 20/03/2020 04:37

I'm in the hospitality industry and we're all on 4 weeks unpaid leave. Very nervous that it will be followed with redundancies; it's hard to see how they can be avoided.

DH's job is related to sport broadcasting, mainly football, so is also looking uncertain.

We've just been told that DS's nursery won't be closing after all, so even if we take him out (which we will) we'll still have to pay fees.

Stressful times.

InfiniteSheldon · 20/03/2020 04:44

All my work cancelled but I have to keep doing support work unpaid on the hope it will start up again

Sobeyondthehills · 20/03/2020 04:55

I have a lot of friends and family that are self employed within the employement industry, so technically they haven't lost their jobs, but they have no wage coming

YewandOak · 20/03/2020 05:06

We heard yesterday, that we're temporarily out of work as from close on Sunday. Been offered redundancy but all being well,we've still got jobs to go back to at some point. We will get holiday pay but that only gives us a month's wages with a little extra thrown in.

Methyl · 20/03/2020 05:10

I work for a small company. Boss called an all-hands meeting yesterday and asked us all to take a two month long 40% pay cut to keep the business afloat. If we don't all agree then they'll be forced to make redundancies.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 20/03/2020 05:11

A number of retailers are hiring at the moment either in store or in warehouses. A quick look on LinkedIn and Iceland, Co-op, Asda, Boots, Alliance Healthcare are all hiring.

Hooperjooper · 20/03/2020 05:35

@Lifeaback tell your niece to go ask in store at the Co-op. They are starting people straight away as long as they have two pieces of ID

puds11 · 20/03/2020 05:39

My company have said they’ll do everything they can to avoid job losses but I’m expecting to be asked to take a pay cut. I’m happy to do this if it means I still have a job. Luckily I’m in to no payment part of mat leave so had planned to have no money at this point. My DH works in an essential role so won’t loose his job. We are very bloody lucky!

FrankUnderwoodsWife · 20/03/2020 05:42

Husband in finance lost his job this week. A friend of ours who owned a number of restaurants laid off 750 staff. In London. Seriously grim times

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2020 05:42

Not yet but I've been told that unless the government offer help then we will be closed in 2 weeks. So it's pretty imminent.

ivykaty44 · 20/03/2020 05:55

Many posts in my local Facebook for jobs in supermarkets, many just taking on if you contact them and all over £9.50 per hour

SimonJT · 20/03/2020 06:10

My boyfriend lost his job yesterday, he works in insurance, all trainees were fired. He was only four months from qualifying. We’re lucky that I can afford to support him financially. But I’m really worried how this is going to effect his citizenship application.

flowerycurtain · 20/03/2020 06:12

Farms are desperate for people to. This time of year a lot of seasonal labour normally turns up. Maybe a great way to keep an older teen occupied?

Knocksomesense · 20/03/2020 06:13

My husband has lost his work. My business is in dire straits. My husbands and son are both in the vulnerable groups. I literally have no idea what to do.

shebagthehag · 20/03/2020 06:27

Self employed but working for a small business, they are actively trying to keep me in including doing things that aren't my usual day to day stuff but the reality is if we do not get the custom in they won't be able to afford me for much longer.

Actually making myself quite ill with all the worry

QuimJongUn · 20/03/2020 06:32

DD has. Small cafe, she'd only been there a few weeks. She was doing it for a year to save for her master's and she's devastated.

I'm so sorry to everyone who's lost heir livelihood Flowers

claracluck78 · 20/03/2020 06:57

I've been paid for March but will be unpaid from April. We're a tiny company and with no income from sales we can't pay anyone.

We've all decided to run a skeleton staff on no salary for 3m in the hope the business survives and we will be able to hit the floor running when this is over.

We are lucky in the sense we received a pretty large inheritance this year which will make things ok for us but appreciate we are living in a bubble financially and others are less lucky than us.

SociallyDistanced · 20/03/2020 08:36

Yes. I was let go last week.
I'm.an airline worker.
I don't think the airline industry will bounce fully back for many years.

More if my colleagues got let go this week and more have been told to expectvlwtters next week.
Everyone I've ever worked wirhbis on unpaid leave.
The Airport I am based at has so few flights going most workers employed by shops, cafes, security, car hire etc have all been let go.
2 weeks ago we were busy training new staff for the summer season increase in work and expecting our summer rostas. They've been scrapped and no one will have a job for the summer.
DH is also.employed in the Aviation industry. He has had no work this week and well, like me, with no planes flying anywhere, there a no requirement for his role.
This week everyday so a Many people I know in the travel, airline and aviation industry have lost their jobs. Every single day rhis week someone has called or messaged me to say they been let go.

I've worked in this industry through 9/11 and the Ash Cloud, but never have I seen anything just obliterate this industry like this
