People are more worried about buying toilet rolls than coronavirus, they need to wake tf up.

coronavirus-italian-mom-and-these-are-the-mistakes-we-made-

What a mother under lockdown in Italy wishes she had done differently in the early days.

There was an absolutely horrendous item on the Channel 4 news tonight showing the city of Bergamo in Italy. It was truly terrifying and everybody should be concerned that we are heading the same way.

I don't think that we are Italy but like the rest of us I can only guess 🤷🏼‍♀️
we'll just have to wait and see.....

justasking111 · 19/03/2020 23:51

When they see the results, families not being able to say goodbye to their loved ones, crematoriums mass burning relatives, perhaps then they will regret their laissez faire attitude. Of course will be too late then. City folk really are different from my rural lot.

AngelicaKauffman · 19/03/2020 23:52

I think we need to stop talking about ‘scaremongering’. I’m sorry but we should be scared and change our behaviour accordingly

We should be wary. Being scared is natural but that doesn't mean it's a good thing.

Clearly scaremongering is a problem. I've seen at least 2 threads today full of people talking about how they can't stop crying, some saying things like "the world is ending" and "it's beyond our worst nightmares". These are over the top reactions – people are MORE scared than they should be due to the bombardment of rumours, misinformation and scare stories.

DippyAvocado · 19/03/2020 23:52

But the rate of death here is higher than it was after the same period of time in Italy. How can we not be like them? (Except possibly worse!)

Derbygerbil · 19/03/2020 23:56

Sadly the government here made it pretty clear several vita lock-down measures are never coming.

I genuinely think they will... it’s when not if, but they’re not going to broadcast it in advance. By necessity there will be little warning.

I think lockdown IS coming imminently, they just need to finish preparing the police and military first.

Babyroobs · 20/03/2020 00:12

I think they will give very little notice of lock down. They are trying to avoid panic. Personally I don't think it can come soon enough.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 00:15

I think by saying zero chance they have back themselves into a corner - everything they plaining they say not at this point or no plans for. But zero chance or no probability is stronger language.

Derbygerbil · 20/03/2020 00:19

I think by saying zero chance they have back themselves into a corner

But they’ve not said there’s zero chance of a lockdown per se. There’s enough wiggle room, and besides, they’ll just say the science has changed!

@TheCanterburyWhales I was on that thread with you last week, it's nice to see you back. Now staythefuckhome 😂

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 00:21

They said no chance of needing papers like france and Italy.

BradleyPooper · 20/03/2020 00:26

I'm British in Texas. Remember when the USA elected Donald Trump as President and the rest of the world went "wtf"? Well, UK, the rest of the world is just staring at you right now wondering wtf you're doing.

We have shut all shops (except supermarket) and restaurants (except to go orders). Schools have been mostly shut for a week and today our state governor ordered all schools to be shut. No gatherings of more than 10 people either. No playparks, gyms, pools, recreation centers are open. Supermarkets are very quiet and well stocked, except for toilet paper and some cleaning products.

I'm scared for family back inthe UK, epsecially elderly relatives. I'm not saying the USA has it right and there have been some critical errors along the way but the UK looks like a disorganized shit show right now

Notcontent · 20/03/2020 00:26

I agree. I am in London and since the start of this week I have been working from home and my DC are at home. But we have also discontinued some group activities that other friends are continuing. I am taking precautions that my elderly neighbours are not. I just don’t understand it.

NotOneToShoutOut · 20/03/2020 00:26

I have MS and live in London. There were more people in tescos then there were in my hospital today.

NellyGrace · 20/03/2020 00:30

I'm really not keen on Boris at all and I certainly did not vote for him.

But I'm starting to see a pattern here. He says that something is almost definitely not going to happen - closure of schools was one. There's always a small chance that it might though ...

General population gets all steamed up about it and then Boris announces that in actual fact it will (ie school closures) happen.

I know that I'm not the first to realise this, but they are psychologically preparing us, building us up and most importantly getting us to want and feel the need for this to happen. So when it does happen it doesn't feel like an imposition but rather something we actually wanted in the first place.

Sorry if this is all obvious to everyone else. I'm just thinking aloud.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 00:30

I think they might shut recreational stuff this weekend across the country but i really dont think it be till next week if not longer till papers are required - they shut that idea down too strongly to be able to u turn within 24-72 hours. They have used something nothing being ruled in or ruled out but no current plans instead.

NellyGrace · 20/03/2020 00:33

But actually I do live in London and the area in which I live is very quiet now. People are scared and are definitely (not all but most) social distancing.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 00:33

Remeber he never ruled out schools.

By the sound of it i am not sure they have the legal ability to run a lockdown till the emergence act is passed next week - why need powers to shut things in that if you already have them. Other countries tend to use decrees but we don't have a way to pass parliament currently.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 00:34

emergency act.

ViciousJackdaw · 20/03/2020 00:37

We cannot compare the UK to Italy, there's so many differing factors. Besides the elderly population (who often live with their DC and DGC), they gesticulate more, they embrace, even male friends kiss each other on the cheek. The (enviable) way they live their lives leaves them more susceptible.

Having said that, we do have the power to control this. If every single one of us isolated now, we'd be through to the other side a lot quicker.

NellyGrace · 20/03/2020 00:43

Is there anything about this emergency act in the news yet?

It was being mentioned on Newsnight just now, but I haven't seen it anywhere else.

Angryrant55 · 20/03/2020 00:47

It was released this afternoon and should be law next thursday.

jewel1968 · 20/03/2020 00:48

IKEA is closing on Friday until further notice. Wonder how many other shops are following.
