Why are people saying they're 'self isolating' and then going out shopping etc?

I know two people...both friends of mine who've announced over the last few days that they're self isolating....both are healthy youngish adults with no underlying conditions....within 2 days one was out shopping with her mate and the other posted a selfie he'd taken in his car whilst out and about.

Do they not understand what self isolating actually is?

Do they mean social distancing rather than self-isolating?

Although you are ok to go for drive when self-isolating I think.

JigsawsAreInPieces · 19/03/2020 20:59

We’re self-isolating but I do go out in the car to the post box to post the odd eBay sale and for a drive out - we meet no one and speak to no one. We’re notconfined to barracks, it's not house arrest, it's isolating ourselves from other people.

Calic0 · 19/03/2020 20:59

I’ve noticed a lot of people don’t seem to understand the difference between self isolating and social distancing. I’ve given up trying to explain it IRL.

LangSpartacusCleg · 19/03/2020 21:00

Because they are idiots who don’t understand the difference between self isolating and social distancing.

ALemonyPea · 19/03/2020 21:03

Confused about self isolating and social distancing.

I've a friend who should be isolated,Maher whole household are showing symptoms, she did three days before she was out at the shops buying essentials, despite saying she had bought enough food for three weeks and half of her friend group saying they'd get her anything if she needed. She's an attention seeking drama queen, not surprised she was the first I knew to have symptoms.

Dylaninthemovies1 · 19/03/2020 21:06

We’re social distancing: both wfh, and DS is off nursery. But we do walk the dog and ds has played in the garden all day.

Have a Tesco shop coming Saturday but after that we will need to stop ordering online as the priority will be older and vulnerable people

UnaCorda · 19/03/2020 21:29

Because they're more interested in virtue-signalling and garnering attention than doing anything meaningful. Why the need to make an announcement (on social media, no doubt)?

Sorry to be rude about your friends, but you did ask!

Pedallleur · 19/03/2020 21:52

Was watching the mob in a supermarket today. You know that nobody uses hand gel but everyone is picking up baskets and pushing trolleys. The handles on the baskets/trolleys don't get wiped, petrol pump handles and atm kybds similarly. Had to close my local Aldi today. Too many people buying too much stuff. So distancing/isolation? It's Bollox. Next time you go to a supermarket just stand back and watch and see if you agree. So what are people doing with the hand sanitizer?

FortunesFave · 19/03/2020 21:58

Una yes....dramatic selfies with masks and self-congratulatory FB posts from both.

Actual supposed self isolater as daughter has symptoms ... her husband was at the gym the other night and she was asking about going to the zoo yesterday. I despair

snappycamper · 19/03/2020 22:00

People are just stupid. They don't understand the difference between self isolating and social distancing. A friend who is apparently self isolating sent me a selfie from the beach today Hmm.

It's 40 miles to the beach.

Yeahsurewhatever · 19/03/2020 22:03

Literally who cares about the words used
They’re doing what is correct for their health and as they have been advised.
If they use the wrong word, maybe you can get over it and be pleased you have time to worry about something so trivial at this point

Birdshitbridgegotme · 19/03/2020 22:03

Some people are just using it as a excuse to get out of work

mildlymiffed · 19/03/2020 22:03

@pedallluer to be fair, we all do this. However I make a conscious decision not to touch my face now when in supermarket knowing that I have touched contaminated surfaces potentially. Before I get into car after food shopping I hand sanitise. When I get home I wash my hands thoroughly with soap and water only opening the main front door with my hands.

Doubt everyone is doing similar, but maybe?!!

Not the case. She told me her child has a cough and therefore the whole family would be isolating at home for a fortnight. 2 days later she's at the beach.

BlueSpotty · 19/03/2020 22:14

@snappycamper she sounds like the type of person who sends her child into school after they've been throwing up all night!

DdraigGoch · 19/03/2020 22:18

@eMmAsuper8 I hope that you told her in suitably forthright terms how irresponsible she is.

1981m · 19/03/2020 22:21

Because they need food I expect. I had to go out to get good and medicine. No delivery slots for weeks and a family to feed. What am I meant to do?

thepeopleversuswork · 19/03/2020 22:22

It depends what kind of shopping doesn't it. I'm self-isolating but I have to buy food as I can't get a delivery slot this side of the next millennium and I'm a single mum. So I am venturing out to the Sainsbury's every couple of days. That's the extent of the social contact I'm having at the moment, aside from with my DD.

If you mean swanning around the mall and trying on clothes then they're not self-isolating.

Thought as much. Well there's your answer!
