M.O.T's if we lockdown

My daughter is a key worker as a mobile carer. Her car MOT is due the first week in April and can't afford to get it done before she gets paid at the end of thIs month.

It was something that hadn't even occurred to me but what happens if we go into lockdown.

Will her be able to be MOT ?
If they extend it under potential emergency measures will her insurance be valid?

Many vulnerable people rely on her and other carers and key workers will be in the same situation so you can understand my concern.

My mum is getting hers done tomorrow because it’s due. It’s a question that needs to be asked. Depends on how firmly into lockdown we go, I would imagine.

Book the MOT anyway. It’s likely you’d be allowed to have this done.
If it’s not allowed then the booking alone will suffice until it’s able to be done.
No MOT doesn’t automatically invalidate your insurance but check your policy.
You can easily have no contact physically with the garage. Swab the keys and streering wheel, etc and pay over the phone.

You can MOT 28 days prior to the due date and still preserve the anniversary. If your DD can't afford the test now could you lend her the money so that she can get it done next week?

Something I've wondered too.
Mine in due 17 Apr and I booked it in for 15 Apr which was the first available date my garage could do. I don't, and didn't when I accepted it, expect that I'll be able to take it in and get it done at that point - but who knows.

The bloke I'm seeing who is a transport industry motor mechanic said that HGV MOT's have been cancelled today and tomorrow.

I'm sure there will be an announcement at some point.
EVERYTHING needs considering atm, some of those things more urgent than others.

Good question, funnily enough my car dealer emailed about that today.

They said they are staying open and business as usual.

ClientQueen · 19/03/2020 17:04

I work in a car dealership and everything is open as usual. Mine is booked to MOT next week but as I'm isolating (vulnerable) a colleague is taking it

I'm sure something was said on the broadcast about having a cover note or similar so your insurance continues while waiting for MOT. If you can get in early then great but keep your eye on bbc news maybe or try your insurance company as they must know what is being allowed

Thank you for all your replies.
Sadly I can't afford the MOT it early for her. I really hope they have some sort of contingency plans in place for this. X

There may also be some garages or services which would collect? I used one a couple of times, I think it was called something like Autobutler but it's not the only one. Might be worth asking the garage.
