Can someone help me understand the maths

Last night I expressed dismay at the fact Italy had an increase of over 4000 and that it wasn't slowing down at all.
Ds said but the spread of it is slowing down, that's why there's a logarithmic scale on the website as well.
He tried to explain but I was cooking tea at the time and it didn't sink in properly.
Is there anyone who can explain it slowly for me please
