Is Johnson "Winging" it?

He made great play on the experts and the modeling, his statements on handshaking, the take it on the chin comment and joked that getting more ventilators could be called "Operation Last Gasp" shame it won't be his as PM.

Even now we get comments like it will sweep through the country and we'll emerge on the other side....yeah how many ?

He seems to have been asleep on the job as CV swept from China to Europe, not ordering more equipment, training and testing... until its too late.

Belatedly, he is now realising the urgency of the situation but when the UK needed a leader, we ended up with a clown, with no plan, just reacting to pressure and what others are doing....in other words panic.

However, deep down we all knew this about him, shamefully still voted him in.

www.euronews.com/2020/03/14/covid-19-coronavirus-breakdown-of-deaths-and-infections-worldwide

All sorts of graphs. All sorts of data sorted in all sorts of ways.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 13:51

Fark! Shock

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 13:52

Not wink

Duchessofblandings · 19/03/2020 13:54

Repeat what everyone else has said. We all are.

This isn’t political.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/03/2020 13:54

t’s going to be worse than Iran the way we’re going. Except a different control model, so different a infection pattern is to be expected!

Those graphs aren't comparing like with like, as far as models are concerned.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 13:55

Well I’d rather you were right Curious as atm it feels like we’re being hung out to dry without a lockdown

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/03/2020 14:02

I hope I'm right too! I'd rather remain hopeful than convince myself we are all more doomed. It's bad enough knowing that whatever any government does, lots of people are going to die!

I am 'travelling hopefully' as they say!

PeterWeg · 19/03/2020 14:03

"What else do you think he should be doing?"
I don't think he's' competent to do anything. That was the key point at the the party leader election, he's incompetent and not capable of doing the job. Period.
What he should have done is make decisions close schools, shops, everything TWO WEEKS ago. The number of dead is doubling every two days.
The UK should have closed the borders a month ago and followed the example of places like Singapore, South Korea and China.
Again,

"The link you provided doesn't even mention Hong Kong.^^"
Why would I need to post a link about Hong Kongs colonial past? Doesn't everyone know which countries were part of the empire?

SilverySurfer · 19/03/2020 14:06

What you obviously fail to comprehend is that Boris is deferring to the experts in this case. No-one knows the outcome, it's an unprecedented event and the last thing we need is people trying to score political points at such a time. Why would you want to make yourself look so ridiculous?

If you're so clever and think you know better than the experts I suggest you get in touch with them to explain in detail exactly where they are going wrong.

SFS

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 19/03/2020 14:06

Oh dont be ridiculous. He is doing the job with good advisors. He is treating citizens as people willing to make the right cjoices until they prove they wont. He has behavioural scientists to try and ease us where we need to be. The "gasp" was not a joke it was simply a word slip and it was apalling for the Mirror journalist to leap on it like and Aha got you soundbite for tomorrows headline. I cannot use the expression because the last time I did my post was deleted by the MN police but lets just say she does not deserve precious media space. This is no time for political bitching, to say it is a war type situation is no exaggeration. Please just take it seriously, he is doing ok heading up a skilled team, we have to get the knowledge day by day as it is an unknown virus and an unknown situation so all the plans are subject to change. He is not winging it and it shows alot of ignorance to suggest it

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 19/03/2020 14:08

@SilverySurfer
Spot on

PeterWeg · 19/03/2020 14:08

"And every countries rpesonse will be measured "in stark numbes of the dead" Look at the figures published - all numbers will be inaccurate for a wide variety of reasons, but UK deaths are not skyrocketing in comparison to any other country!"

20,000 dead in the UK will be a good result, 250-500k dead expected without a lock down.

Johnson's seeming unwillingness to work weekends has caught up with him somewhat this week too. Oh yeah! That weekend he spent at Chequers, the weekend nobody has said what he was doing. THINK about it!

FML!

(I've never typed that FML thing before, but that has exasperated me like no other conspiracy theory type wombling ever has!)

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 19/03/2020 14:15

OP You really should focus more. He did Not say schools shoud not close, he said not YET because the advantages might not be worth iy YET. It DID NOT make a joke about GASP, he used a common expression describing a desperate situation which unfortunately described a breath.
They (not him) have taken a path of gradual tightening which may or may not have gone uncritisised. Thing about instant draconian measures that have ended in mass riots? Do you think that never happens. As other posters have said, now is the time to drop Political shenanigans and for once start pulling together. Has Brexit taught you nothing?

TheABC · 19/03/2020 14:16

We knew from the time it exploded in Iran that it was spreading and the nature of modern air travel would make it quick.

Let's just say, opportunities were missed.

  • we could have screened passengers coming back from affected countries
  • we could (and should) have closed schools last week with provision made for keyworkers
  • when everyone was advised to stay way from pubs & cinemas, it should have been in conjunction with financial measures. Why leave everyone to panic and flounder? France, by comparison was explicit in their support when they announced the lockdown
  • Most unforgivably in my mind was the lack of forethought for the NHS. Our lack of preparation (remember, we knew about this since January) will result in doctor and nurse deaths, due to lack of masks, hand gel and other protective equipment.
StealthPolarBear · 19/03/2020 14:35

What was he doing at chequers?

blossombabies · 19/03/2020 14:38

he has genuine fear on his face, i wouldn't expect anything more than winging it when it comes to this madness. i actually feel for him

ellanwood · 19/03/2020 14:38

However, deep down we all knew this about him, shamefully still voted him in.

Not deep down at all. He has been an unashamed clown all his life. Nothing hidden about it. How people didn't see is beyond me. And many many many of us didn't vote him in and felt sick and scared that such a self-serving, self-aggrandizing oaf managed crawl up the greased pole to power.

ellanwood · 19/03/2020 14:39

@blossombabies - yes, yesterday during the press question time after his speech he looked terrified. Like it had just dawned on him that he wasn't starring in a capering episode of The Thick Of It.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/03/2020 15:03

What was he doing at chequers? Either having a weekend off before COBR or maybe, other meetings we haven't been told about! The kind that include national security, perhaps! We won't be told, either way!

Baaaahhhhh · 19/03/2020 15:43

The UK should have closed the borders a month ago and followed the example of places like Singapore, South Korea and China

In which case we would have been the only country in Europe to have done so.........

Jocasta2018 · 19/03/2020 15:48

Of course he is. Like other governments all across the world. Everyone has been reacting as best-made plans have thrown aside due to events.
I believe that we will only know what we are doing by April 2021 by which point we will have been through:
First reports of the virus;
Virus arrives;
Countries' initial reaction to virus;
Virus spreads;
Peak virus;
Will cases of the virus decline in the summer months?;
Has this mystical 'herd immunity' happened or can the virus mutate and we all start from scratch?;
Have we found a vaccine?;
Autumn/Winter 2020/early 2021 - does the virus return again?
Only at this point will the world know how best to deal with Covid-19.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/03/2020 15:49

that, pretty much!

jasjas1973 · 20/03/2020 08:06

@NoMorePoliticsPlease

wtf has Brexit got to do with anything?

We had weeks of advanced notice of this outbreak, govt did nothing, no ventilators, PPE, no action on food for NHS, 2 weeks ago advised people shaking hands was fine!!! only now letters to recently retired staff going out.
Until the schools closure, everything so far he has done is "advisory" and no one is taking any notice.

You seem to associate pulling together with supporting a fucking clown.

As for he is following the expert advice.... why is this expert advice soooo different to every other countries? especially when it comes to testing and socialising?

I'd add in the last few minutes, my DD who has a part time job as a carer (when not at uni) has been told they have no masks, no hand sanitizer and only gloves in Large.

Or the CC nurse on FB who can't feed herself.... Govt doing fuck all, in an instant they could demand SM's set aside shopping hours for staff but they haven't.

So don't tell me i should support this Cxxt.

Your last sentence tells me all I need to know about you and how you can’t be taken seriously.
