Feeling for fever with no thermometer

What is the best way to gauge a fever without a thermometer .

DH feels hot whe I touch his back and face so I think it's a fever but is this a good indication?

Chest and back feeling hot so his 'core'. How does he feel in himself? Is he shivery or hot and cold?

He says he feels ok just a slight headache. He does tend to play down feeling unwell a lot so I am never sure with him

I was taught to check with lips to forehead (as hands can be unreliable).
