To be pissed off that no one seems to practicing social distancing?

Ok so the title pretty much says it all. I was out running a few errands (thankfully not grocery shopping) and was in a queue of about 4 people.
I was second so decided to keep a good distance from the person in front of me. The man behind me was standing very close behind me and so I took a few steps to increase the distance but the idiot kept creeping forward closer until he was practically breathing down my neck.

For the record, there was plenty of space just a huge effin black hole where normally common sense would be. The other day a lady working at Sainsbury's was making small talk and i guess it was a pleasant chat, a relief from all the supermarket-sweep-like shopping craze - but then she just kept leaning over and breathing all over me! Arrggghhh!! I didn't want to be rude but really should have just stopped it.

Anyway, as you have figured, I'm really fed up with this outbreak already.
Tell me what's ruffled your feathers and let all the steam out !

I can't get over how selfish some people are though. I was thanking the lucky stars that I have been able to breastfeed mt 6mo baby. There's shaming photos of a woman in one of the shops buying what must be at least 30 tins of formula. So she's totally happy for another baby to starve to death.

There is no need for people to act how they are, taking eveything for themselves so there is nothing for anyone else. Many elderly people can only access their nearest shop so are left at the mercy of others who will happily let them starve. Shops should be rationing things at 2 or 3 per customer.

Eckhart · 18/03/2020 19:32

@Cam77 I agree that the main thing we should be worrying about at the moment is what name we use to refer to the PM. why is nobody dealing with this? It's an outrage.

theflushedzebra · 18/03/2020 19:38

I saw loads of older people out and about today.

It does make me wonder how they will manage this shutdown, manage the isolation. Sad When I nipped to the shop, there was an old man buying lottery tickets. I mean why? Perhaps they just are more stoic than younger generations, having been born/grown up in the war/post war years.

My own mother & step dad (both over 70, and stepdad with copd) are under strict instructions to stay home.

Alwaysreadyforbed · 18/03/2020 19:40

At work, I’m packed in with at least a hundred people. I can see why when you do that 5 days a week, social distancing outside work isn’t a high priority for some.

middleager · 18/03/2020 19:41

People in other countries are Shock at our behaviour here and have tried to warn us.
I'm trying really bloody hard here. For my family. For the planet.

Greed and selfishness.

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 18/03/2020 19:43

I had to go shopping earlier. Nobody was practicing social distancing at all wheh queueing, although i guess it would be hard to as it was so busy.

Mlou32 · 18/03/2020 19:52

I think it's just a case of people not thinking. We ate not used to this social distancing so people just don't realise what they are doing sometimes. Politely say sorry, I'm trying to keep a distance as per government advise and most people should realise and take a step back. If not and they act like arses, well that's their problem.

diddl · 18/03/2020 19:52

Went to our supermarket today.

Two tills open & one queue.

When person is paying, other starts to put stuff on belt.

Tape on floor to keep people distanced.

WaitroseIsMySpiritualHome · 18/03/2020 19:54

I drove through town today and there were people:

Milling around the shops in groups
Sitting in starbucks drinking coffee in groups/pairs
Eating in Pret in pairs/groups
Huddled together smoking outside an office
Walking shoulder to shoulder with strangers
Standing in huddles waiting at the zebra crossing

A lot of teens and elderly seem to be completely disregarding the recommendations. Teens because they think they are invincible and the elderly because they believe that soldiering is admirable. Which is usually would be, but not at the moment.

It looked literally the same as any other day. I was Shock. I suspect London (where i am) is going to have some kind of enforced lockdown soon - those cavalier people are going to get a shock.

LINABE · 18/03/2020 20:44

LOCKDOWN needs to happen ASAP. For the sake of the Vulnerable and the sick.

megletthesecond · 18/03/2020 20:47

I have been doing a pretty good job of it. I was talking to neighbours in the street and we all kept a good 2m away from each other.

theflushedzebra · 18/03/2020 20:49

Radio 5 Live voiced rumours of a London shutdown on air this evening. About 5pm. She did stress they were "unconfirmed" - but still, BBC is really careful usually about confirming stories.

TwelveIslands · 18/03/2020 20:50

I'm self isolating right now. I'm pretty keen to go on with it for months more because of all these arseholes.

MarshaBradyo · 18/03/2020 20:51

I agree it’s ridiculous and putting a huge amount of people at risk

MadameF · 18/03/2020 20:52

I'm in France and we are on strict lockdown. Unfortunately it is the only way to ensure people respect the rules. I imagine the UK will follow suit very shortly. I hope so!

Eckhart · 18/03/2020 21:06

@Alwaysreadyforbed Yes, if they think that social distancing is something you do purely for themselves. But that's not what it's for. They need to think it through a bit more. Quickly.

Sissymate2 · 19/03/2020 05:19

@RuggerHug
Thank you for the kind words about my mum....luckily she's pretty healthy...at 89 she hasn't ever had to take any medications but she has taken her vitamins and exercises daily. She walks around the inside of her house for 20 minutes going in one door and out the orher in a big circle🤣

LoveIsLovely · 19/03/2020 05:26

@middleleaguer I'm in Korea and people here can't believe the behaviour of westerners, they're really shocked, like did yous not learn from China, then Korea, then Italy, no?

British and American people must be among the dumbest on the planet

crazydiamond222 · 19/03/2020 05:36

My parents told me they have started coughing when people move to close and they soon move away!

Danetobe · 19/03/2020 05:44

What is happening in the UK is shocking from my perspective. We have been 'on lockdown' for a week and the cases are still rising. We can still go out for a walk and to get food but the streets are empty, the shops have limited customers to 10/15 customers at a time and compartmentalised the shops with stickers on the floor - only one person allowed in each space (obviously within reason). Hand washing facilities are outside supermarkets as of yesterday. No one on the streets, no kids mixing, everyone has been asked, not required, to stay home as much as possible. There are no signs of that that trust is being taken for granted by the population so I'm hopeful that it will stay unenforced. People in the UK seem so uncompliant its almost as though they want draconian measure forced upon them. I don't know, I'm scared for my friends in the UK, the PM seems to be conducting a terrible virology/social science experiment. It is horrible to watch. Stay inside your houses as much as possible.

Danetobe · 19/03/2020 05:47

We also have plenty of food and everyone seems calm and happy. I think strong measures has actually helped people cope with the stress not heightened it.

Pluckedpencil · 19/03/2020 06:13

I always thought Boris Johnson was pretending to be a buffoon and that maybe in cabinet meetings there was a secret intellectual side to him. But he really is just a stupid public schoolboy.

All he has to do is listen to thr advice other PMs are offering. Conte made Italy shut down early on and the country was immediately calmer, more resolute, more united, next to no panic buying. Errors were made, like the announcement of Lombardia closing without cancelling the night trains out, but Boris could have learnt from this. Instead he has already leaked that London is going into quarantine on Friday so that the plague ridden rats can leave from the sinking ship.

Pluckedpencil · 19/03/2020 06:15

Anyway my point was meant to be...we can't believe it's happening because it's never happened in our lifetime. People don't take it seriously until the govt practically lock people in their houses through fines and a police presence. It's been proven again and again in Italy, France, Spain, China....
