To be pissed off that no one seems to practicing social distancing?

Ok so the title pretty much says it all. I was out running a few errands (thankfully not grocery shopping) and was in a queue of about 4 people.
I was second so decided to keep a good distance from the person in front of me. The man behind me was standing very close behind me and so I took a few steps to increase the distance but the idiot kept creeping forward closer until he was practically breathing down my neck.

For the record, there was plenty of space just a huge effin black hole where normally common sense would be. The other day a lady working at Sainsbury's was making small talk and i guess it was a pleasant chat, a relief from all the supermarket-sweep-like shopping craze - but then she just kept leaning over and breathing all over me! Arrggghhh!! I didn't want to be rude but really should have just stopped it.

Anyway, as you have figured, I'm really fed up with this outbreak already.
Tell me what's ruffled your feathers and let all the steam out !

YANBU

I have been doing my best to practice social distancing so as to protect the vulnerable tenants who are my neighbours.

Most people in the area seem to believe that the virus is a hysterical conspiracy theory.

I was shopping at 4am at my local 24 hour supermarket to try to stay safe. Now they are only open 6-10 so I arrived at 6 and alongside the people with sticks, strollers and wheelchairs were a young family with 2 children who were coughing a lot of the time.

The father, who was well over 6 foot and built like an MMA fighter breezed his trolley through the crowds and had it stuffed with toilet rolls and tins in no time.

It was a terrifying experience for me.

I spoke to some of the staff and they told me that they had to call the police the night before due to people fighting over tins. They also said that a midwife had driven there at 10pm to buy sanitiser for work as it had been stolen but there was none left for her to buy.

The staff were clearly stressed, exhausted and very disappointed in people's bad behaviour. I made sure to thank them for their work and they really appreciated it. Please do say thank you to the people working in retail as many of them are scared about their own family members and have no choice but to go to work.

I spoke to a man working on the tills in another shop a couple of days back. His daughter is profoundly disabled and has to live in a sterile environment. He was very afraid for his daughter and I thein was very traumatised by witnessing people's greed and selfishness over the last few days.

A couple of days ago I saw a man in his 30s cough freely without covering his face, clear his throat and spit a big flob onto the pavement.

I have the rage I do

Clawdy · 18/03/2020 18:14

Did someone upthread say everyone in their local shop queue was " masked and gloved" ?? People in my local shops are being sensible, but I haven't seen a single mask or gloves. Is it just where I live ?!

daisychain01 · 18/03/2020 18:15

I'm sorry to say it like this OP but the reality is that it will only come home to roost when people actually experience a real person dying, either in their community, in their family or their social circle.

At the moment they are too dumb to think beyond themselves, it's just talk, something that's happening to some distant person somewhere else, somewhere in Italy or China.

It will only be a matter of time.....Sad

@hoodathunkit My mum works in a maternity hospital on the NICU ward and they’ve had so much hand sanitiser stolen! Some from the stock cupboards (so it had to have been a staff member) and then from bedsides too. Absolutely beyond despicable Angry

dottiedodah · 18/03/2020 18:18

Well down here , seem to be doing quite well .Went to the Vets with my dog for her jabs .Have an outdoor consulting room under a wooden shelter .She was pleased we didnt have to go inside and so was I! Much easier and safer .Went to Tesco quite well stocked ,got most of what I needed and some painkillers too.Went to park kept my distance ,but managed a chat and a wave!

Rosehip10 · 18/03/2020 18:22

If we should be avoiding pubs and restaurants then just bloody close them. There are idiots who will keep going whatever. Scenes in Liverpool last night of packed bars for St Patricks with drunks roaring "fuck the corona virus" Angry

My mum works in a maternity hospital on the NICU ward and they’ve had so much hand sanitiser stolen! Some from the stock cupboards (so it had to have been a staff member) and then from bedsides too.

That kind of disgusting behaviour will hurt staff morale as well as putting staff and patients at risk

I have no words :(

for your mum and her patients Flowers

I feel like I am living in a parallel universe. I have looked at the charts that show how much social distancing can slow the rate of infection and its compelling. Yet the locals are still going to the pub (believe me I'd love to), friends are going to lunch, people are planning trips. Am I over interpreting or are they just not listening ? I saw a friend as I went for a couple of items at the Co-op. We chatted briefly but I kept stepping backwards and she kept stepping forwards. Do people hear different news broadcasts to me Confused

billysboy · 18/03/2020 18:27

our local pubs are still open , absolute madness

Omashu · 18/03/2020 18:30

@hoodathunkit thank you ❤️

There was also a family who kept stealing other families food... people are just acting crazy and irrational. It’s so sad Sad

Kit19 · 18/03/2020 18:35

My DH is still not getting it. He has the option to work from home but says he’s fine to go into the office 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ I’ve just sent him the social distancing chart in an effort to get him to understand!!

CoffeeHere · 18/03/2020 18:38

Same here. School mums talking about getting kids together now school is closed. Hmm

Dia12 · 18/03/2020 18:41

Also really fed up of listening to the few who keep telling me their conspiracy theories - wtf does that matter now anyway, especially to those thousands that have died as a result of it.

Same, a friend of one of my children has been sent home today. He has told my child his mum is ringing school tomorrow to say he doesn’t have COVID, he just has a cough. They won’t be self isolating as a family because it’s ridiculous apparently. Hmm

PlainBritishFlour · 18/03/2020 18:42

Well I work in a nightclub/bar. We are staying open. After a couple of pints people are not being careful.

And while we are quiet we are still busy.

Sandsnake · 18/03/2020 18:43

Took kids to large gardens today. Loads of open space so easy place to get fresh air whilst limiting contact. I’d pre-warned DS that the cafes would be closed. I was really surprised that they were open and pretty full of people having lunch - many of those looked 70 plus (usual weekday demographic). I can understand people getting out for fresh air but having lunch there just seems such an unnecessary risk.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 18/03/2020 18:45

Yesterday I had to go to the hospital for a long awaited appointment. The hospital was incredibly quiet and the waiting room almost empty. So why did two women come and sit directly next to me?

People don’t have the sense they were born with!

WaterOffADucksCrack · 18/03/2020 18:51

I was putting my things on the checkout and thought someone was trying to take something out of my backpack. It was a man probably in his 60s pressing up against me trying to put his things on behind mine. He said "sorry I couldn't reach" I replied "I haven't finished unloading the trolley anyway and you could have opened your mouth instead of touching me". Then I coughed a lot (into my hand) and he stepped way back. I don't have a cough and I'm not ill but he just annoyed me. I can't stand being touched by anyonr except family.

kateandme · 18/03/2020 19:10

i know.boris is trying to give them a "choice" right now.have they seen france.whrere police are fining people and are allwoed to handle them back home if it isnt for a sheeet of paper allowing them out for essential things.and handle them away from eachother.its awful.the silence the era of the place is terrifying for them all.
my mum said today "im 3 seconds away from telling him to step the fuck away from me!

Amanduh · 18/03/2020 19:15

Watched kids and adults piling into soft play today. Ridiculous

Cam77 · 18/03/2020 19:17

It’s to just a continuation on from everything else. Remember when China locked down, the world’s 2nd largest economy, and it was just “the flu” and no big deal and there were people making clever posts on Facebook comparing it to grazing an elbow or whatever. They were probably the ones making those posts and comments. They’ll catch up one day.

MelbaToast · 18/03/2020 19:17

I blame it on the government for not being really clear. It's like "work from home, if possible. Don't travel, unless you have to." It's just too vague and he needs to be explicit that all social contact should stop unless it's a matter of life and death.

KimMumsnet · 18/03/2020 19:18

Hi, all. We've moved this thread to the Coronavirus topic now.
Ta.

pollyhemlock · 18/03/2020 19:21

While out for a walk with disabled dd today, keeping well away from everyone ( it’s a country park sort of place) , I observed outside the tea shop an enormous coach crammed full of elderly people, most of them looking 75+, which had apparently come down from Essex. We are on the south coast. Unwise, no?

Cam77 · 18/03/2020 19:21

Please stop calling him “Boris”. He is not our mate and simply by putting himself forward for PM he has put the country at risk as he is totally out of his depth. Mr Johnson is nothing but a middling journalist who was fortunate enough to have parents who got him in to the best school in the country, and it is showing every single day. And BTW, I would have said had Corbyn been elected. The contrast between them and Varadkar in Ireland is embarrassing.
