To be pissed off that no one seems to practicing social distancing?

Ok so the title pretty much says it all. I was out running a few errands (thankfully not grocery shopping) and was in a queue of about 4 people.
I was second so decided to keep a good distance from the person in front of me. The man behind me was standing very close behind me and so I took a few steps to increase the distance but the idiot kept creeping forward closer until he was practically breathing down my neck.

For the record, there was plenty of space just a huge effin black hole where normally common sense would be. The other day a lady working at Sainsbury's was making small talk and i guess it was a pleasant chat, a relief from all the supermarket-sweep-like shopping craze - but then she just kept leaning over and breathing all over me! Arrggghhh!! I didn't want to be rude but really should have just stopped it.

Anyway, as you have figured, I'm really fed up with this outbreak already.
Tell me what's ruffled your feathers and let all the steam out !

I'm not in the UK but have family and friends there and I completely agree. The attitude is baffling to watch from afar.

The only thing you can do is be direct. Wave them back and say "I'm socially distancing"

Sexnotgender · 18/03/2020 16:47

YANBU, it’s giving me the absolute rage.

Fucking idiots.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 18/03/2020 16:47

Had to pop into the supermarket this morning. Was watching a little gaggle of elderly ladies enjoying their coffee and gossip in the cafe, all crowded round the one table. Completely oblivious.

SimonJT · 18/03/2020 16:49

I’m self isolating. There are people at my work place with new coughs who can’t be bothered to self isolate.

My road (busy in London), has been very very quiet.

ellesbellesxxx · 18/03/2020 16:49

Yanbu someone asked if I was in a queue and I responded that yes I was just keeping some space.. they responded that they didn’t know what the fuss was about and that they didn’t know anyone who died... I responded politely that I would rather be cautious then find out 😱

MissPoldark · 18/03/2020 16:54

School sent out a letter about social distancing, asking everyone to keep 2 metres apart at pick up time. And what did everyone do? Stand in their usual groups chit chatting of course!
What fucking planet are people on!!!

formerbabe · 18/03/2020 16:56

I noticed this whilst queuing in shops today. I find it bizarre enough at the best of times. Standing 3 cm behind me won't get you served quicker ffs.

SamSeabornforPresident · 18/03/2020 16:57

I'm not sure that 'out running a few errands' counts as social distancing either, OP. So perhaps people were wondering the same about you. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Casino218 · 18/03/2020 16:58

Tesco was packed! Quite the opposite of social isolation!

OhMy05 · 18/03/2020 17:07

Same thing happened to me OP. I was waiting for the till to be free and three men who had stocked up their baskets with just lynx and baby wipes (loads of each) stood behind me chatting to each other loudly.

I moved forward to distance myself and they followed, even though there was plenty of space behind them. Every time I inched forward to get away they did the same even when I was beyond the barrier. No point trying to socially distance yourself when others don’t know how to do the same.

teraculum29 · 18/03/2020 17:10

yeap, people just have death wish.
pubs full, high streets full, at least where I live.

and just to compare, in Poland, when you go shopping there are only allowed 3 people at the same time, at the entrance you need to sanitised your hands.
And when waiting outside people are keeping 2 metre distance.
And shops are reasonable stock up

hipslikecinderella · 18/03/2020 17:10

Have a little bell and shout - "unclean, unclean"
Should get ppl stepping away....

Ninkanink · 18/03/2020 17:12

I am, my DH is. My grown-up daughters are.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people who are extremely hard of thinking.

senua · 18/03/2020 17:13

I am learning to put my wire basket between me and the person behind.

nevermorelenore · 18/03/2020 17:13

Its certainly not being practiced round here. Lots of posts on facebook about how we should all go to the local restaurants. Our local soft play is apparently packed. Must be a germ factory right now.

Dia12 · 18/03/2020 17:13

Errrrr @SamSeabornforPresident - should I run through the difference between social distancing, self isolation and running errands?!!!!

There's always one smart ass 🤨

My nearly 90 year old uncle with a dodgy heart popped round after mass on Sunday after telling me on the phone he was self isolating with his wife. He was going to collect her from her different church afterwards. They're scared to go in the garden though although he did remind me he survived a war Confused Stuck in work looking after vulnerable people when I'm vulnerable myself, watching people post their pub and gym pictures on Facebook is hard.

5foot5 · 18/03/2020 17:17

We have just been given the option to work from home.

Only half the people in the office (I am one of them) said that they would like to do that. I know at least one of the people determined to come in to the office is delighted that his local is remaining open and intends to go. And he has an underlying health condition!

solarisbabe · 18/03/2020 17:17

They were in the playground this morning - nearly everybody was at least two metres apart.

Northernsoullover · 18/03/2020 17:19

I was in Boots yesterday and I stood aside from the only other customer by quite a distance. More people walked in and stood by him so I cheerfully said I was after him and pointed out that it was sensible to stand apart. No one bothered.
I chatted with the cashiers and said how in some countries they had lines on the floor for people to stand on to which she replied 'well we don't have that here' I wanted to scream. 'WHY THE FUCK NOT'? such a simple measure and it may just help.

Dia12 · 18/03/2020 17:20

Hahaha @hipslikecinderella - I love it🤣 I think that may well be the only way 🤷🏻‍♀️

It sounds like the Polish have got their shit together and enforcing some kind of order/common sense. Why can't we do same in shops? It's certainly much easier than the chaos that is ensuing at the moment.

@SamSeabornforPresident - I'm not sure that 'out running a few errands' counts as social distancing either,

Social distancing is not the same as restricted movement or self-isolation. Getting out and about is fine, provided you keep a minimum of 2m away from others.

I was walking in the park today and people were really good about it. Everyone was passing others in single file at opposite sides of the approx 3m wide path. The ice-cream/coffee van (which I was a bit surprised to see) has drawn lines 2m apart to show where people should stand when queuing .

Mind you, I'm in Ireland and we do seem to be taking it a bit more seriously than the UK.

Eckhart · 18/03/2020 17:21

@SamSeabornforPresident Social distancing is maintaining a distance of 2m, and not having unnecessary social contact with people. It's important that you know this, because you're meant to be doing it now.

CSIblonde · 18/03/2020 17:29

I had to go out today & everyone walking around was swerving away from each other which made me feel better. Corner shop after being fine is now mad, boxes everywhere, staff in every aisle restocking , but all they are out of is loo roll. And their basics are price wise same as Asda thankfully. Queue close, but everyone masked & gloved:except the elderly!

Stickybeaksid · 18/03/2020 17:31

A lot of business in Ireland have taped lines on the floor at two metres apart for queues in shops. We are all complying so far. I find the attitude in the U.K. baffling
