How can I make myself useful?

I've seen several posts about how community's are coming together to help the more vulnerable, I would be happy to help in any way I can, but have no idea how to go about it.

What are other people doing?

I have told our elderly neighbours to contact us if they need anything.

They are pretty self sufficient so may have hesitated otherwise.
