Should we be in self-isolation?

My family and I are currently in self-isolation.
My daughter has a mild cough (coughing approximately once every 30 minutes) She has had this since a bout of tonsilitis three weeks ago.
yesterday all my children were sent home from school when her teacher heard her cough. I had to collect them and so I told the school where I work and they sent me home for 2 weeks. My husband also left his work and we decided to start the 14 days.
However, her cough is not new or continuous and she doesn't have a fever. I am beginning to doubt whether we should all be trapped in the house for this reason... Technically she doesn't fit in to the government's definition but the school seems to be disregarding that and now that they are home I feel we should be in isolation but is this reasonable?? I'm going round in circles....!

It doesn’t sound like you need to. I doubt school will have the children back though?

It doesn’t fit the current criteria, no. A lot of people are doing this as a precaution anyway though. Personally I would stay in as much as you possibly can.

No, you shouldn't be really. The advice is to stay home for a new and continuous cough but at the same time, I'm not surprised the school sent her home.

My asthmatic DS is at school with a cough, neither new nor continuous but I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens to us. I'm mentally preparing for 2 weeks stuck in the house/garden. I think I might nip to a garden centre and get some seeds and pots and soil etc to keep us busy but outside if possible...

No, ds has been couging for over 3 weeks with a throat infection and I have been coughing for over 2 weeks with possibly the same/asthma exacerbated.

However the school do know that ds has been checked by both NHS111 and the nurse practitioner at our local surgery. Are they aware of the tonsillitus diagnosis?

I’m keeping mine off regardless and I expect the schools will be closed before long.
