Fuck! ☹️

Sorry to hear that 😥 It said in the paper that some of the supermarkets needed more staff.

HeartyGreenSalad · 18/03/2020 10:24

you poor thing , what a horrid situation , as meerkat said try the supermarkets

SeriouslyRetro · 18/03/2020 10:25

I’m so sorry, everything’s just a bit pants at the minute. What industry are you in?

tiggertogger · 18/03/2020 10:27

Care homes, NHS and Amazon all also recruiting. Gvmt departments expected to increase recruitment in coming days too.

M0recakeplease · 18/03/2020 10:32

Thanks for replies. I feel a bit lost tbh. I didn’t expect it to be so soon. The galling thing was is that I’m new there and left a VERY secure job a couple of months ago to make the move. I feel like an idiot and embarrassed.

I’m in finance so hopefully will pick up something in the next few months. In the meantime I could definitely look at temp jobs. My friend works in Waitrose so I might check with her if there’s anything going.

I’m going to spend the day crying and eating I think 😔

Apparently 111 are crying out for people to work on the phones. Dont know if that's true or how feasible it is for you

Vinylsamso · 18/03/2020 10:35

Care jones are crying out for staff. Phone the ones near you directly.

ExServiceWoman · 18/03/2020 10:35

I'm so so so sorry for this. Sadly you're not the first and def won't be the last.

I really hope you find a new job soon. I would imagine Support Work is in high demand at the moment. Anything in your area?

AnotherEmma · 18/03/2020 10:37

Sorry OP Sad
You can probably claim new-style JSA (if you've made enough NI contributions which you will have done if you've been employed for the last few years.
www.gov.uk/how-to-claim-new-style-jsa
It's not a huge amount but every little helps.

Hope you can find a new job soon.

Doobigetta · 18/03/2020 10:44

If you were in your old job for a while and had a good reputation there it might be worth swallowing your pride and asking if you can go back. If they haven’t replaced you yet they’ll be keen because it saves them taking a chance on training someone new. It’s worth a go, you never know. Good luck Flowers

Hopeful201 · 18/03/2020 10:49

That is horrible, how were you to know this would happen when you left your last job? Such horrible timing. We have 2 new starters coming in the next few months, I expect they are worried they might not have a job to come to as well.....

Teacaketotty · 18/03/2020 10:51

I really feel for you OP, I’ve just had a new job offer retracted so pretty screwed my self! I’m an architect so not easy to walk into another job, especially at the moment - hoping I can get some temp work somewhere doing anything!

GenderApostate19 · 18/03/2020 10:53

Food production and distribution are in need of extra staff.
DH works for one of the biggest cheese and dairy producers with multiple factories across the UK, in his factory alone they had 13 people in self isolation yesterday.
These places run 24/7 and will keep us all fed through this crisis.

They are every bit as vital as the NHS etc.

PersephoneandHades · 18/03/2020 11:05

I've just been told that I'll likely have no work after this Friday too. I'm with an agency but am (was?) in the process of being recruited by the company I'm temping for. I'd signed all the papers, done the health checks and the security checks, the only thing left was for them to sign on the dotted line.

I'm currently at my desk trying to stop myself from crying. And I'm one of the luck ones too as I have extremely supportive parents who will help me. I can't imagine what it's like for people with no money and no support.

diddl · 18/03/2020 11:09

That's terrible, Op.

What is the long term plan here?

Businesses shutting down for month(s), people self isolating "just in case"-it's just not sustainable, is it?

M0recakeplease · 18/03/2020 11:19

Sorry to hear that Teacaketotty and PersephoneandHades - it’s just so shit isn’t it and this is just the start.

I’m already looking for vacancies in my current field and am waiting for a couple of calls back. Definitely start looking if you can and by the sounds of things there are temporary positions on offer which should help see us through.

This has really put me off working for small businesses as previously I’ve only ever been in a FTSE100 co. or the public sector. I know they make redundancies but they’ve got a lot more in the bank to act as a buffer if needed.

M0recakeplease · 18/03/2020 11:21

I know what you mean diddl. I think we need to follow China/Italy. Lock everyone down for 3-4 weeks only allow out for health emergencies and once a week for food.

Less economic harm would be caused rather than drawing it out for months. I expect (hope) this is going to be imposed in the next week.

OP posts:
HazelBite · 18/03/2020 11:25

The company that DS worked for went into admin, a week ago last Monday, the irony of it being that they were in the business of pharmaceutical distribution, and had gone to the wall due to European contracts not being renewed. He is now sitting at home and has been applying for jobs but no-one is taking on permanent staff at the moment.

diddl · 18/03/2020 11:28

I mean I know that this thing is serious-the way it's spreading!

But has there been an element of doing something for the sake of it that hasn't been thought through?

moolady1977 · 18/03/2020 11:31

I applied for a bar job to go alongside my other part time job my interview is next week but am certain it will be cancelled and my boss at the hotel I work at is nigh on positive after a conference call that come Monday we will be shut down its going to be a very tight few months we just have our fingers crossed the firm my oh works for don't go down the pan

tiggertogger · 18/03/2020 12:44

There are so many job requirements out there currently that there is no reason to despair. You just might have to look wider than the roles you normally look at.
