My daughter has a high temp, a bit of a cough and generally feeling under the weather, just phoned work (Cleaning company it's my 2nd job, i do afternoon school cleaning for a bit of extra money) told them daughter was ill and I would be following government guidelines and self isolating. The response?
Oh have you phoned the doctor?
me: what?
yeah you should phone the doctor it might be tonsilitus, we've had a lot of people phone into work today with sore throats.
me: (in my head) wtf you absolute fucktard, what planet are u living on right now you cock wombling thundercunt (what I actually said, and surprisingly remained calm whilst doing so) no I haven't called the doctor and absolutely won't be in the near future , and like I said I will be following the governments guidelines, you might want to read them again. Goodbye.

We're fucked aren't we?

Lots of threads moaning about people not doing as they are told. You try to do what you’re told and be responsible and this is what you get.

Sorry to hear about your daughter, hope she gets better soon. But I'm not surprised to hear about your work. It's incredible how unaware some people are about what's going on. The leader of a hobby club that DS goes to messaged today asking if he'd like to come to their half term club. No mention of it possibly being cancelled. Then a school mum messaged to invite us to her daughter's whole-class birthday party at a soft play centre at the end of March.

Some people still think it's all a big fuss about nothing. While I get that some might not be worrying about getting ill because they think we're all going to get it anyway, not to acknowledge the reality of what's going on around them re venue closures and social distancing is just so strange.

InYerFace, thanks. It seems to be such extremes of reaction in people, either panic buying and utter selfishness, or just not taking it seriously at all! I don't know what's worse!

I’m astounded how little some people seem to care about those around them.
It’s not hard, just socially distance yourselves!!

Karmagoat - you're so right! I've been so shocked at the attitudes of people who I know well and would generally consider to be sensible! Most are still going to the gym, out for coffee, down the pub and seem amazed that I don't want to do the same. On our class Facebook group, one person has sent their kids into school because they're sure it's 'just a cough' .

Spacecadetagain · 18/03/2020 10:56

Yep I posted on another thread that a friend of mine is working with a woman who is wearing a face mask because she said her son has symptoms but she’s not taking time off as she can’t afford it !

This is why the Chief Medical Officer said he thinks 55k people have it as if yesterday.

Right from the off we've had people saying 'it's only a bit of flu, it doesn't even kill that many people ' and now because they think it's only a couple of thousand they still aren't taking it seriously.

Karmagoat · 18/03/2020 15:30

Hopefully a full lockdown will start making people see that this is serious

I very stupidly went to work on Friday morning with a cough.

After an hour, i realised how bad off I was, and asked to go home.

Initially my work were reluctant as we were short staff and it would have been my 3rd absence in a year. I think they let up in the end because people were starting to talk.

I haven’t been back since and in isolation. I understand why some people try to carry on though. It’s hard with some companies

Saying that though, a mum did message and postponed the class party this month

MorganMoon · 18/03/2020 15:47

I feel you OP. I think there are a few employers (mine included) that will try to guilt people into not following the guidelines.

Mine is now set up for complete WFH ability and yet we are being told the office will be open until it's forced to be shut and they expect every fit and able to come in still. Completely unnecessary.

A family friend should be isolating, her husband and dc are but she's gone to work.
And the dh has been to the supermarket too.
