I need a themometer. Im at my witts end. Have searched in store and online and cant find any other than whats on ebay for triple their price £100+
I want a digital one for the ear. Does anyone know where they are in stock? This is crazy. My health anxiety is through the roof with a broken thermometer, 3 young kids and an elderly father

Do you have a local Facebook community page? Put a request out on there. Some mums have a couple. They buy one, then see others professing to do all kinds of fancy stuff and often end up with a few.

FamilyOfAliens · 18/03/2020 07:01

Iv been using a point and shoot fridge thermometer Iv brought home from work

You stole a thermometer from work? Shock

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2020 07:10

I agree you don’t need one. If someone feels that they’re hot then they have a temp. If they feel unwell give paracetamol, plenty of fluids.

SoupDragon · 18/03/2020 07:19

Can you tell if someone feels hot if you also have the same temperature?

itgetsthehoseagain · 18/03/2020 07:24

In my experience, the eyes of someone with a temperature look different, as if someone has drawn a fine red line just under the lids. Probably cased by capillaries widening to try and expel heat. Also, the sufferer tends to feel cold in themselves - they'll be wanting more blankets, duvet etc!

GrannyHaddock · 18/03/2020 07:25

The digital thermometer is one of the least useful "improvements" in my lifetime. On the rare occasions when it is needed the battery is usually dead. If you can find a battery it doesn't always bring the thermometer back to life. Just another item we have to keep replacing.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 18/03/2020 07:43

Would a thermometer for a tropical fish tank help?

Only if the scale goes up to 40 ish. Normal tank temperature is well below 30. Otherwise a thermometer is a thermometer, so go for it.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 18/03/2020 07:44

Centigrade, I should have specified.

meg54 · 18/03/2020 07:44

I had the same problem last week tring to get one for my elderly Mum. Fortunately a friend gave me a spare.
I also was checking out PET THERMOMETERS online.
I know they are for sticking in kitten's bums, but they were in plentiful supply, and if they read temperatures, that's what matters.

cittigirl · 18/03/2020 07:50

I don't agree with those saying you can tell by touch. You can't always. My dd used to have febrile convulsions with temperature spikes. One time the paramedics came they were very surprised by her 40c temp when she felt normal to touch.

slipperywhensparticus · 18/03/2020 07:52

My youngest can feel hot on the outside but his temperature is normal I rely on my thermometer

SoupDragon · 18/03/2020 08:00

I bought a digital thermometer when DS1 was born and haven't used it since DS2 was small - they are 21 and 19 now. Put a battery in it the other day and it is fine.

Pinkdelight3 · 18/03/2020 09:21

I agree with alice that it only feeds the anxiety to keep checking.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/03/2020 09:25

@PotholeParadise - yeah, I expect we'll stop testing here soon too. Apparently, according to the GP surgery yesterday, 10,000 tests have been done with only 200something positives so far.

Natsku · 18/03/2020 11:47

Often DD has felt feverish to touch but when I've checked her temperature its been normal (I have two thermometers, ear/forehead one and an under the arm one and check with both just in case one is off - I've had both those thermometers for years before someone thinks I'm hoarding them!) so I don't trust touch alone

mamansnet · 18/03/2020 14:24

@Nostrings457 my friend just sent me this, any good?

thermometersdirect.co.uk

Branster · 18/03/2020 14:34

OP, have you tried changing the battery? Just a thought.
Try independent pharmacies and if, worse comes to worst you might be able to borrow one of those under the arm types from a neighbour and make sure to disinfect properly.
You will know if anyone has a temperature without the thermometer. You will aim to bring down the temperature. It is not an ideal situation, but you will also know things are really bad as people with dangerously high temperature tend to feel really ill. Don’t forget you are a mother and your instinct will guide you. Try and find some quiet time for yourself as often as you can to bring your anxiety levels down. The anxiety (perceived or not) is exactly what your children don’t need right now. Try and look after yourself so that you stay strong for your loved ones. With or without the thermometer, the temperature will be the same. You will know when things are serious. At that point, don’t hesitate to call 111 or an ambulance. Be practical.

BouleBaker · 19/03/2020 17:29

The IKEA meat thermometer one will work fine under the tongue. My mother in law couldn’t get one on Amazon. Had one ordered and shipped and then the delivery date kept slipping back. I’ve sent her the old kids one.

Dilovescake21 · 19/03/2020 17:34

Screw fix and Tool station sell infra red thermometer- would they work??

mumda · 19/03/2020 17:46

But a thrmal camera for your phone. It'll be much more fun the rest of the time

helpIhateclothesshopping · 19/03/2020 19:54

I got one in Aldi recently for £9.99, it's contactless. We had an ear/forehead one before but I thought this looked more hygienic.

sleepylittlebunnies · 19/03/2020 20:19

I’ve still got one that I bought in an ovulation tracking kit when ttc DS13. Worked back then and still accurate now.

nannykatherine · 19/03/2020 21:42

i got clever in boots last weekend and bought the tomee tipee baby travel
vanity pack as it has a small
one in
it’s in baby section in a nice zip up case along with baby nail clippers hairbrush etc 😜

onegiftedgal · 19/03/2020 21:44

@user1471453601 it's a bit unfair to say that really. Simple supply and demand. You probably wouldn't think twice about spending £4 on a coffee that has cost £0.20 to make or buying the last seat on a plane at an inflated price because you needed it. Some people ar elosing their jobs and this is something they can make some small amount of money on. We all knew this was coming months ago, we could have bought the basics then.
