I need a themometer. Im at my witts end. Have searched in store and online and cant find any other than whats on ebay for triple their price £100+
I want a digital one for the ear. Does anyone know where they are in stock? This is crazy. My health anxiety is through the roof with a broken thermometer, 3 young kids and an elderly father

OP posts:
PotholeParadise · 18/03/2020 00:00

For example, if I rang up right now and said my husband had x temperature which indicates medical assistance needed, but he was otherwise well, I think any sensible GP would suspect that the thermometer was faulty.

Southeastlondonmum2 · 18/03/2020 00:08

I always know when I have a temperature as my back "tingles" as if I have sunburn. Does anyone else have this?

ASandwichNamedKevin · 18/03/2020 00:09

To those saying OP doesn't need a thermometer, her opening post says she has health anxiety. A thermometer could provide reassurance that a temperature is 'normal' or if it's not then it can give an indication of how high the temperature is, especially if she's worried she's just being paranoid.

OP if you can't get a thermometer there will be other indicators as to how people are doing and feeling, so trust your instinct and observations, but if you can get one hope it helps.

SmellyBeard · 18/03/2020 00:16

I got one off amazon by buying a baby kit - the kind that come with a hairbrush, nail clippers etc. It was the Tommy Tippee one I think.

I ordered it in Sunday and it's arriving tomorrow.

chartreuse · 18/03/2020 00:17

As a PP suggested I use a digital meat thermometer under the armpit. You should be able to get one of those easily enough

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/03/2020 00:24

Try contacting Braun directly.

user1473878824 · 18/03/2020 00:24

I bought a £5ish one from amazon last night that gave me a delivery date of five working days and I had an email today to say it was despatched. Boots, Argos etc sold old.

user1473878824 · 18/03/2020 00:27

But to be honest OP I bought this because I used to have health anxiety which is flaring up at rare moments now - I am worried that when the thermometer arrives it will really feed into my anxiety. You may be better off without one, and @ASandwichNamedKevin I’m saying this after seeing your post because you’re right.

OP, with health anxiety I do almost think you (and me) would be better off without one. Hope you’re managing okay x

HazelBite · 18/03/2020 00:37

I got one in a local chemist £3,50 when I was picking up a prescription.

PotholeParadise · 18/03/2020 00:42

ASandwichNamedKevin

She can't get one, so the best way forward is rationalising what one is for, because she has health anxiety.

If you are treating someone who is ordinarily ill, the exact numbers really don't matter. If you are a HCP, treating someone ill enough to be in hospital, with the years of subject knowledge on how to effectively interpret a temperature, then you need a thermometer. For most children watching CBeebies at home with a teddy, you don't.

TBH, for the average parent, thermometers just seem to result in parents frantically googling to work out if 2/10ths of a degree above normal temperature needs paracetamol.

The only times I've needed a working thermometer at home has been to work out if a kid was just saying they felt too ill for school or if they were actually coming down with something, and none of mine became that good at lying until they'd nearly finished primary school!

Ohffsanywilldo · 18/03/2020 00:50

Would a thermometer for a tropical fish tank help? I need one as I have a baby due soon and need one for the bath so thinking I'll probably get one from a pet shop. Least you know they're accurate.

Italiangreyhound · 18/03/2020 01:18

Argos

Italiangreyhound · 18/03/2020 01:20

Oh sorry not in stock the one I found locally but may be near you.

PeapodBurgundy · 18/03/2020 01:55

I can't get the sheaths for ours, and it won't work without them. Four times I've ordered and paid for some, then the order has been cancelled and refunded due to lack of stock. Got a 5th lot on order, but not due to come until end of April. I have 4 left in the packet. Hoping we stay healthy, if not, I'll have to give one each and clean it between uses until more arrive.
The joys!

There was plenty on eBay late this afternoon

transformandriseup · 18/03/2020 03:19

I was going to suggest the Tommee Tippee kit also

Queenofeverything44 · 18/03/2020 03:23

Go direct to the manufacturer, I have a tommee tippee in ear arriving tomorrow for 40.00 including postage.

AliceAbsolum · 18/03/2020 04:16

As you have health anxiety you should definitely NOT get one. Reassurance maintains anxiety.

Just checked cans there are some digital ones on EBay for around £5. They are LCD screen ones. It’s easy to tell a temperature though and the best way forward to cool the forehead, neck and face and only use paracetamol if it gets much more dangerously high. I know OP how worried you must be, I am beside myself with anxiety. I’m in therapy on the NHS having EMDR and my mind is going numb with all the panic buying of food, it’s beyond horrendous. I have three kids so I totally get his frantic you must be. But children are not suffering much from this virus do try not to panic. I’m silly to say that though because it’s normal to panic. I’m
awake at 4.30 am as I cannot sleep at all. I am having nightmares and waking up shaking. I’m trying not to fall apart apart so keep strong and if someone did fall sick, I’m
sure there will be many kind people who’ll lend you a thermometer such as a neighbour or charity. 111 can help you to identify it too if you’re worried although be prepared for a long wait on the phone.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/03/2020 04:53

"too hot" isn't a good enough indicator for this situation - in Australia we've been told that they will only test for coronavirus if the temp is over 38.5 degrees. Can't tell that with hand or lips, need and actual thermometer.
My digital one hadn't been used for years, and when I changed the battery, it stopped working completely, stupid thing!
Luckily I found I had an old fashioned mercury thermometer, so used that. DS1 had a temp of 37.7 degrees, felt very hot to the touch, but not enough for testing.

Having been through a few days of him coughing etc., with no further fever and now coughing up goo, we've been told he almost certainly does NOT have coronavirus. He still can't go to school because of the cough - schools are sending kids home who cough - but the rest of us are in the clear.

PotholeParadise · 18/03/2020 05:02

They're not testing here, full stop, ThumbWitches.

user1480880826 · 18/03/2020 05:51

Don’t stress. You don’t need a thermometer. You can tell if someone has a temperature by feeling their forehead.

And if someone is ill it will be fairly obvious without needing to know their exact body temperature. Also, if they’re not telling you that they feel ill then you don’t need to give them medicine. The NHS does not advise giving medicine simply because you have a raised temperature.

SmallPinkBear · 18/03/2020 06:27

I bought a Braun in ear one for my MIL at the weekend (with a delivery of 26th March) and it is coming today so keep checking as everywhere is getting stock in

DoubleAction · 18/03/2020 06:37

I listened to a medical person on R4 yesterday explaining that the temperature is there for a reason - to fight infection. In most circumstances, especially in children, it should be left to do its work. There is no need to know what the numbers are and no need to treat it.
