I need a themometer. Im at my witts end. Have searched in store and online and cant find any other than whats on ebay for triple their price £100+
I want a digital one for the ear. Does anyone know where they are in stock? This is crazy. My health anxiety is through the roof with a broken thermometer, 3 young kids and an elderly father

All you can do is keep checking argos and possibly phoning stores that usually sell them.

If the high temperature is for the virus, you'll know without a thermometer.

itsamadmadworld · 17/03/2020 22:02

I think the best ones are the ones that do the forehead too (at least that's what i was told by the first aid teacher). I got one from amazon that does forehead and ear though

GhostsInSnow · 17/03/2020 22:39

We've been using a digital meat thermometer on adults. It's as accurate under the tongue as any other you just need to be sure the person using it is sensible enough not to move it with the spike.
They are about a fiver on amazon next day because I don't think people have realised they do the same job. Useless with young kids though.

ladylunchalot · 17/03/2020 22:57

I managed to get one on Friday from The Range for £1.49. It's the kind you can either put under your armpits or under your tongue. I'd tried Argos and local chemists but they were all out of stock.

FlamingoAndJohn · 17/03/2020 22:59

The ones linked to on Amazon won’t be delivered until the 15th of April, by which time the need may well have passed.

womaninatightspot · 17/03/2020 23:03

I know my local pharmacy had some (I was in waiting for a perscription and someone bought one) might be worth trawling the little places, twas nearly 30 quid though

Angelnix · 17/03/2020 23:03

Try your local independent pharmacy, we got two today from ours (one for us, one for my parents) and they weren't expensive either.

Amanduh · 17/03/2020 23:04

Our aldo and lidl have got them.

@itsamadmadworld, it's out of stock and, odd for amazon, has no price. robbing badtards. A special circle in hell exists for those taking advantage of the current situation

GreenTulips · 17/03/2020 23:08

Check the sellers on Amazon they aren’t UK stock and unlikely to be delivered.

Nostrings457 · 17/03/2020 23:10

Thanks - think the independent chemists may be the way forward

Right. What exactly do you need a thermometer for? Think about it. What will you do differently if you have the exact number in front of you?

I bought one when I was pregnant because it was in the list of stuff one should have. It broke within a year, and by that time I'd already discovered that I could tell when my baby felt too hot with my hand.

If you, your child or your father have a raised temperature, you'll feel it by touching them. You don't need a specific number of degrees to warrant isolation, just a temperature and/or cough.

Curious78 · 17/03/2020 23:18

All you can do is sign up to be notified when back in stock. And check that you're not getting any old thermometer, a lot of the cheaper, lesser known brands will give more false readings than not

TeeniefaeTroon · 17/03/2020 23:21

Have to agree with @PotholeParadise
I do have a thermometer but I've always found placing my lips on my child's forehead is just as good an indicator without the numbers.
My son calls my lips my thermometer 🤒 😁

WhoAmIToTellYou · 17/03/2020 23:34

lips on forehead and i can pretty accurately tell the temperature. I haven’t used proper thermometer for years. It’s a superpower you develop when you have kidsGrin

mamansnet · 17/03/2020 23:36

If I remember rightly, Tommy Tippee do a little vanity case with baby nail clippers and hairbrush for about £10. I'm sure there was a thermometer in there. Could you get your hands on anything like that?

Potkettlexx · 17/03/2020 23:39

My dc used to have seizures when his temp spiked too much. We had quite an expensive thermometer to try and catch it before it peaked.

Anyway I became a dab hand at being able to touch my ds with the back of my hand or my cheek as I cuddled him and I could tell if he was hotter than usual.

You’ll feel instinctively if your dc have a temp Op. you could use one if you’re other children as a comparison with the back of youth hand in their cheeks and forehead and again put your cheek against theirs and I think you’ll know.

AmelieTaylor · 17/03/2020 23:45

The NHS aren’t going to be taking an adult to hospital on the basis of my wife/husband says I have a temperature! They’re going to want to know exactly what temperature & for how long. As an adult & parent you should know the persons temperature so you know when to start taking Panadol. It’s not good to take it before the risks of not are worse. Your body having a temperature is it’s way if fighting the virus off, but there comes a point where it’s too dangerous to let it stay high

I bought a digital forehead/ear one off of amazon (£28) it’s not great. I’m using the old ‘under your tongue’ one, it’s more accurate! (Currently just tracking to check ‘normal temps).

KillingEvenings · 17/03/2020 23:45

Mamansnet - someting like this

Mucky1 · 17/03/2020 23:46

Iv been using a point and shoot fridge thermometer Iv brought home from work 👌

Potkettlexx · 17/03/2020 23:53

@AmelieTaylor

If she can’t buy one or get hold of one though then she’ll have no choice but to take tips from here.

They wouldn’t have had digital thermometers back in the day so you’d have to work it out other ways.

If someone has a temp it generally goes hand in hand with feeling really tired and unwell. Most people will know that their child is not themselves and be able to give a descent rough estimate of how long they’ve had a temp

PotholeParadise · 17/03/2020 23:57

TBH, I don't think the NHS isn't going to be taking any adult to hospital on the basis of a temp. If any adult has a temperature that would ordinarily indicate further treatment needed, it will be accompanied by other symptoms and they can be described.

I did 8000 steps on my lunch running round town finding one yesterday as ours decided to die. Got the last one in boots.
