Asking for a local friend from a local expat group, whose relative is stuck there at present and can't get out.
From what I understand, all borders are closed and all flights out cancelled.
Relative in question is a Swiss national and, apparently, Switzerland has only bare bones diplomatic relationships with Guatemala. It's also not on the repatriation priorities list as - somewhat understandably - the authorities appear to be going by "number of citizens affected". According to my friend, they've spoken to the Swiss Foreign Office and come to the conclusion that they're basically doing - direct quote - "fuck all".
I've promised to ask around and am hoping that the genius of Mumsnet may be able to give some insights.
In particular:
-
if anyone has information about how to get out of there and back to Europe - even if it costs half a fortune - the affected person's family would like to hear and is happy to pay.
-
if anyone has contacts that could help "in case of emergency" - particularly in the Xela region but also nation-wide - please share!
-
any general type of information on expected developments and windows of opportunity re. getting someone home are highly welcome.
I've been asked by my friend to highlight that their relative is stuck not because they're irresponsible to have travelled there but because they're employed by a charity and are stationed there.
If anyone can help: please do! I feel desperately sorry for my friend and her family, who all seem desperately upset, and would love to help out with some relevant information/contacts.
