Is an under active thyroid a problem with Coronavirus?

Just as the title says really, trying to work out whether having an under active thyroid makes me more at risk from Coronavirus or not? It’s an auto immune condition so maybe it does...

If you are on thyroxine, which is doing the job of your thyroid, I don't see why you would at any more risk than anyone else. I have Hashimoto's and this didn't even cross my mind.

You don't need to have a flu vaccine for hypothyroidism so I don't think it will be an issue.

I don't think so. Hypothyroidism is pretty common so if it was a factor they'd probably have picked up on it in the Wuhan cases.

That’s what the BTF said so fingers crossed. I hadn’t given thyroid issues a second thought until I saw autoimmune conditions on the list.

If a dr or someone who knows for sure could comment that would be reassuring (or not, depending on which way they go with it!)

Ok I asked my brother who is a doctor, and he said no one can say anything for sure as not enough research but as it's not a respiratory issue he didn't see why it would make us at any more risk than anyone else 🤷🏻‍♀️

The BTF info explains - it's not having an autoimmune condition which is of itself a risk; it's having one of the types which is treated with a medication which weakens the immune system resulting in being immunocompromised. Thyroid medications do not do this.

Thanks all, reassuring. As I’ve volunteered to help various older people with things that would otherwise put them at risk assuming myself to be young and healthy! Now I can go ahead with that without undue panic!! Take care everyone. X
