Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

The supermarkets ordering systems are predicated on preceding demand. On that basis, the shelves will be heaving in a week’s time.

formerbabe · 17/03/2020 20:32

No meat, fruit, veg, tins, pasta, rice on the shelves here in se London. No paracetamol anywhere. Big punch up outside of the store too. I nearly burst into tears whilst walking round. We're fine, but lots of very elderly people walking round and a disabled guy in a wheelchair just staring at empty shelves... so awful.

AtAt123 · 17/03/2020 20:33

Massively offensive to say that preppers are responsible for this shit show.

I get sick really often and have had pneumonia repeatedly over the last 5 years. Corvid19 could very likely kill me.

So i have kids and am oten ill. My cupbaords ALWAYS have supplies in in case I can't shop or get out. 3-5kg different pastas, 8-12 tinned toms, 8-12 passata, 6 jars hot dogs, 6 pasta bakes, 8 cocnut milk, 4-8 curry pastes as well as fruit and veg in tins. Then loads of pizzas, 4-8lb sausages and bacon, 2-3 loaves, 4-6 cereal, frozen milk, bulk dog and cat food, hell i even bulk buy my guinea pig food and sawdust. I buy my loo rolls in two pack of 3 x 18 from farmfoods and make sure I always have 36 put aside. Plus all sorts of opther stuff like cordial and tea bags and just things to make life easier.

It is my security blanket, knowing my kids and i can eat if I am ill. I am really sorry for you that you do not have the foresite to have your own security blanket OP, but that is on YOU and not me. I have been running a house for 22 years and even before I got ill we always had well stocked cupboards in case of emergency. You can call preppers idiots but personally i think ots you that is the idiot....who deosnt have an emergency plan? an insurance policy for hard times?

LightAsTheBreeze · 17/03/2020 20:35

I’m not a prepper but a bargain hunter so always have loads of everything and haven’t had to panic buy at all. I doubt all the shoppers in our Waitrose were going to dehydrate their veg. I mainly use mine for fruit though I suppose I could try other things in it in these hard times

HeresMe · 17/03/2020 20:35

If I have done my calculations correct, if each of us had one can of soup a day for two weeks that would be 70 cans of soup

I'm not saying it's accurate but the serving amount is usually half a can not a full one pair with some bread it's down to 35.

Thelnebriati · 17/03/2020 20:36

You aren't prepared and you're panicking, I get it. Its also why I don't ever discuss prepping with anyone in real life. when you get desperate enough you'll start harming people face to face.
You'll probably still find a way to blame them for your behaviour.

ApplepieWhy · 17/03/2020 20:36

I am quite worried-have not been panic buying or prepping just going along as normal waiting for payday to do my usual monthly shop-local shop has hardly anything in and I cannot get an online delivery until the 31st!!! I am actually starting to worry now Confused

AllPointsNorth · 17/03/2020 20:37

I’d be happy to see rationing of essentials now, so everyone had the same access to basics, rather than the fastest and strongest with the cash to snatch and grab.

Theodoreb · 17/03/2020 20:38

Really don't think I'm scum I have schizophrenia and bipolar 1, I have 3dc oldest has adhd middle severe autism and youngest epilepsy. I always have at least a months worth of food so if I am unwell or one of my kids are with their sn I don't have to worry about going to the shop. Sometimes my episodes last months. Yes I am still shopping every week but only buying fresh meat, fresh fruit and veg and some milk and bread while keeping my long life food for emergencies.

I spent all my disability money the last 6 months on long life food What would you prefer disability money was spent on if not food for when I am too unwell to get to the shop? I haven't bought any toilet roll, tins, jars or pasta in 3 weeks.

frostedviolets · 17/03/2020 20:39

I'm not saying it's accurate but the serving amount is usually half a can not a full one pair with some bread it's down to 35

But people don’t actually eat half a can do they?!

Me and DH always have a full can, plus a hefty load of bread on the side.

Theodoreb · 17/03/2020 20:40

Oh and forgot to add treated myself to a bottle of rum hope this is ok by you.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/03/2020 20:40

I've stocked up alone wine before the pubs close and everyone wants to drink at home. Our big tesco and asda are shutting at midnight to restock.S Yorks.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 17/03/2020 20:40

On not alone

UnaCorda · 17/03/2020 20:41

Managed to get paracetamol (one packet), baked beans (one tin), tomato soup (one tin), soap (I think it was the last bar in the shop) and tampons (two small packs) today. Was amazed, but that was three different shops. My local small Sainsbury's had more bread than the large store.

It's very disconcerting, and a bit shit if you don't have the ability to try multiple stores for what you need.

LightAsTheBreeze · 17/03/2020 20:42

A lot of people have bought extra freezers to put in their garages as chest freezers are quite cheap

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/03/2020 20:43

It's the preppers who have decided to jump on board in the last few weeks, jumping on here asking for tips are the ones culpable alongside panic buyers yes this I agree with.

I mean what time limit separates a prepper from a panic buyer?

OP posts:
UnaCorda · 17/03/2020 20:44

I'm mainly stocking up on things that would be easy to cook and eat if I become ill, rather than trying to accumulate enough food to last a month or more.

Orangecake123 · 17/03/2020 20:44

I haven't been to the store for the past two days, because i haven't needed to.

So i'm not buying up anything you need now because I've already prepped.

Lovemusic33 · 17/03/2020 20:44

Big supermarkets here (sw) have loads of empty shelves, no toilet roll, cleaning products, some tins, not much meat left but if you go to the smaller shops such as Spar or co-op your more likely to find things like bread, milk and toilet roll.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/03/2020 20:44

There are also reasons people don’t prep that aren’t “their fault” and don’t warrant the sneering remarks of people with a garage full of beans and toilet roll: lack of money or space being two very valid reasons!

OP posts:
OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/03/2020 20:45

As for rationing, the Aldi had a sign only 4 of an item per person- that to me isn’t sufficient

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 17/03/2020 20:46

Whilst everyone was panic buying food I was busy panic buying a lawn mower, fence paint, plant pots and ingredients for home brew.

Priorities.

Cary2012 · 17/03/2020 20:48

Can't do online shop at Sainsbos, no slots available for three weeks.
Got enough at Lidl Saturday, loo rolls etc, but no more than usual.
Tesco nearby empty.
Local Co-Op today, milk ok but no eggs, little cereal and milk.
DD went to huge Tesco just after midnight Sunday to get basics, they were sold out early morning.
Early morning probably best bet.

RiftGibbon · 17/03/2020 20:48

I'm in Essex and all shops within 10 miles of home are out of: bread, milk, rice, pasta, chopped tomatoes, paracetamol, Calpol, flour, yeast, toilet rolls and most milk aternatives
Canned veg, canned fruit, pasta sauce, bleach, disinfectant and tinned pulses are very thinly distributed.
Local supermarket had some meat, plenty of pizza and cheese. Other larger stores were ok on "world foods" but scant on Quorn/meat alternatives.

It's panic buying that is the problem.

I have been forced to stock up as have elderly ILs, a friend with low immunity and a child at primary, so we are likely going to need to isolate at some point. But I needed to have at least a spare tin of beans for friend/ILs if they couldn't get out.

Apparently a worker in a local shop was threatened by a customer because they had limit on purchases.

Ventilatorshortage · 17/03/2020 20:49

The government needs to step in.

Some shops are offering the elderly a pre shop opening... Sunday opening hours should be extended for the elderly.

Something should be done and things can be done..

Companies need to help. Even in waitrose poor cashier said they have been given anti bac wipes and that's it. No regular breaks for hand-washing.

As for shopping I remember back in January the preppers trying to alert people to the coming storm. Esp after shelves were cleared in Italy.. One poster had a thred trying to help people, called it homestead peppery and she got sneered at and ripped to pieces..

I always buy on offer, ocado had my favourite Grin loo roll on offer in Jan and Feb so I brought as much as I could back then. I always have pasta as well.

However thanks to the forward thinking mumsnetters on here, I slowly started to build up otherwise reserves as well, medication, each Saturday, I'd grab a pack...

Thanks to the forward planers on here last week I was able to do a comprehensive shop soley for the food bank.

So please don't blame preppers.

Infact if preppers on here had been in government then we would have ppe and ventilators.
