So now: no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread....

Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

I think peppers are hysterical. It's not normal to have anxiety about the possibility of something happening that you stockpile cans months before "just in case" 🙄 also all that canned food and soggy frozen produce sounds rank. They aren't scum but we really shouldnt be admiring preppers as its not a healthy mind set to have.

mindproject · 17/03/2020 21:09

If people bought supplies months or years ago, they are clever and organised and helping the situation now. Definitely not selfish or greedy.

If people are buying hundreds of anything in the last 2 weeks then that is completely different.

TeaAndDarkToast · 17/03/2020 21:10

or Gino Ginelli mint choc icecream... authentic artisan icecream..made in Slough

VivaLeBeaver · 17/03/2020 21:10

My pasta says “made in Italy” on the bag.

mindproject · 17/03/2020 21:12

I started prepping years ago because I was worried about lack of pay rises, job loss, price increases. It's not irrational of hysterical to try and mitigate against some of the circumstances of a very unfair, unequal system.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/03/2020 21:14

So what’s the time limit between a panic buyer and a prepper?
People buying 6 of everything today will say they are prepping for lock down?
Or is it the amount? - but then if everyone takes slightly extra now that clears the shelves.

What people don’t seem to comprehend is that even on lock down people can go to the superMarkets!

I have an elderly friend who has no computer and knew nothing about health advice. We told her she should have food in for possible self isolation as her cupboards were bare.
Too late. Someone took her shopping today and the supermarket shelves were mostly empty. She kept on saying she wanted lettuce and had no idea what else to buy.

Binting · 17/03/2020 21:14

I went to a large Tesco yesterday lunchtime and there wasn’t much there at all (also noticed they’ve really cut down on the usual deals). I grabbed the last bag of potatoes. Few yards up the road and I popped into M&S food store and they had loads of stuff, veg, fruit, meat, bread, eggs... maybe try an M&S?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/03/2020 21:15

She kept on saying she wanted lettuce and had no idea what else to buy breaks my heart!

I was thinking mostly of painting and wallpapering the whole house as it hasn't been done since last year

Are you serious? You decorate every year?

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 17/03/2020 21:16

Oohh M&S might be good! Give it a wk I’ll pop up to Harrods food hall for my milk

RedToothBrush · 17/03/2020 21:16

I was thinking mostly of painting and wallpapering the whole house as it hasn't been done since last year so shouldn't be many injuries and will limit the dc to painting while watching me wallpaper.

I know self isolating is dull so as long as you don't have the kids watch the paint dry, that sounds a great idea.

I think peppers are hysterical. It's not normal to have anxiety about the possibility of something happening that you stockpile cans months before "just in case"

Paying attention to the news and noticing that a) people were panic buying elsewhere in the world when coronavirus appeared in their community b) coronavirus was spreading unchecked from country to country despite the Chinese efforts isn't too much 'just in case' but simply putting two and two together and making an accessment of how likely the same scenario in the UK would be.

It was hardly rocket science, fortune telling nor super predicting to work out that it wasn't a remote possibility but predictable one. It wasn't a 'just in case' mindset.

georgialondon · 17/03/2020 21:17

I'm in London too and al the things you listed are on the shelves in my local supermarkets.

PhoneTwattery · 17/03/2020 21:19

Still can’t grasp the difference between a prepper and a panic buyer?

The OP ladies and gentleman is a prime example of the kind of individual we will be relying on to abide by the rules of a lockdown if we have one. Doesn’t bode well. I put them right up there with the person on a local Facebook forum earlier urging everyone with symptoms to call 911.

Bowerbird5 · 17/03/2020 21:20

The nearest spare shop (5miles) put a load of toilet rolls (4 packs) in the shop windows with £1.29 on them. I had to smile as i went in for the paper. I always thought those girls (woman) had a sense of humour! Grin

DH had to go town today to get some chicken feed and he said most of that was gone. There is always plenty. Then he went to the butchers and they had hardly anything left. Good sized country butchers. Local Co-Op (6/7miles) had hardly anything left. He managed to get some fresh veg. I always have staples of sugar, flour etc for baking and things like lentils and pasta, noodles in anyway. What gets me is where in these modern houses are people storing it. Visions of kids (off school) squeezing down the hallway between the toilet rolls anfd bags of pasta to get to the rooms and being delighted that mum or dad are letting go on the PS and computers as much as they like.

Just want to drop this somewhere...

DS is in Brit-Army, on leave. Supposed to have 10 more days leave... but today he got the msg to say he could be called back to service at any time.
"And don't go out heavy drinking."

He's not happy about curtailed leave, although I guess may as well be soldiering if he can't go out clubbing.
Govt obviously has some plan for the military.

LadyMary50 · 17/03/2020 21:21

The problem at Nationwide today was the system went down so the cash machine was out of action. The only way to get any cash was to go into the building and go to the cashier.I could only draw a limited amount of cash as they were having to do it manually. So not drawing large amounts as it wasn’t possible.

mindproject · 17/03/2020 21:21

The solution is that supermarkets just limit 2 of each item to customers. Problem solved. But I always thought supermarkets wanted to sell more, not less. They just aren't getting the stock in, that is the main problem, not the people. Stop blaming individuals.

And if everyone is buying so much, why is the stock market plummeting and people talking of global recession? Usually when people spend more we enjoy a boom. I smell a rat.

Tana433 · 17/03/2020 21:22

@GreytExpectations Could you BE any more patronising!

@Alsohuman nope I bought my ex husbands share of my house a year ago October my ex husband left the house in a severe state of disrepair having run the house into the ground but as I'm on benefits it is my only chance to get on property ladder. To make the house habitual I repaired damages and threw cream or white paint up in every room and have slowly been buying furniture so will simply be decorating each room properly now as opposed to plain white or cream.

NeckPainChairSearch · 17/03/2020 21:25

Are you saying that you'd usually redecorate sooner than one year later?

My well stocked fridge/freezer/cupboards and everything in general says otherwise thanks. I don’t drink, don’t smoke and it’s none of your business what I spend my money on.

is that why there are no Cornettos?

That’s because of Shaun of The Dead.
